Thought I'd start a thread to see who else is using the Odyssey 7Q+ with their GH4 so we can help each other out with the specifics to our setup. With the new firmware upgrade released a couple days ago, I've been experiencing some monitoring issues and had to roll back to the previous version. But I was curious if anyone else was experiencing this issue too, or if it's unique to my unit.
In this video, the GH4 is set to 4K, 24.000fps, 16-235, 10bit 422, connected via HDMI. You'll see that I power the GH4 on, power the Odyssey on. After a while it starts up, and you can see the feed from the camera. After a few seconds the Odyssey's screen jumps to an image "offset", then a few seconds later (at about 1:05 into the clip) it really starts to jump around. I don't know if my panning the camera really has anything to do with triggering the instability or not. Probably not. Next, I record a clip in ProRes HQ, stop and switch over to playback mode. The clip plays fine and looks as it should despite how garbled it looked while capturing it. This would seem to rule out the camera or cable as the problem. Then i switch back to live monitor mode and reseat the HDMI cable to show that it has no effect -- image remains garbled.
I've been in touch with Convergent Design's tech support and they've been very prompt to reply and promise they are looking into it. However the one question of mine that doesn't get answered in our correspondence is if this is an isolated issue or if others have reported it too.
Tomorrow, I begin principal photography on a feature and was hoping to be able to use the new firmware so I can monitor the full 4096x2160 frame. Until now, the Odyssey's monitor cropped the width of C4K, while recording it in full. This was one of many great features in the new update that I'd hoped to take advantage of, instead, we find ourselves making a last minute decision here to shoot in UHD (3840x2160) with the previous firmware because the new release isn't stable for us. Anyone else tried the new firmware update with their GH4 yet?
