Paging Dr. Cruise...

Cruise definitely has a point about over medication of kids. If he'd just tempered his comments a little he'd be fine. And the Today show and most of those morning shows are out of control. It's a bunch of extremely overpaid egotistical self important anchors.

thartley - For some reason the system wants mindless drones sitting in class. Individual personalities are not welcome. Everything your daughter did sounds about right. Could you imagine a world that didn't have kids saying and doing the darndest things? Sounds like the adults are the ones with the problems.

Schools here NEVER call parents. The system is very relaxed and teachers get ALOT more respect. Students welcome teachers into the class and students kneel before them when talking to teachers. Problems get handled in the classroom or in the Principles office. The school doesn't want to bother the parents. (Thai people never like to bother anyone.) I think if teachers got more respect in the US there wouldn't be as many calls to Mommy because of lizard and fire alarm incidents.

This thread has certainly opened debate on a number of issues. I concur that we are an overly medicated society but to say that chemical imbalances don't exist? My wife suffers from a anxiety (panic attacks) and her medicine has helped her tremendously. I don't think we can make blanket black and white statements about such complex issues. Is the interviewer a jerk? Maybe so but Cruise doesn't get any awards for his behavior either.

Overlandfilms its refreshing to hear someone who's concerned about the real victims of the war. We seem to often to forget, when you send armies into battle people die.

If any of us were interviewed enough times I'm sure we would slip up and look like total a-holes sooner or later. The fact that this thread exists says something about the impact of an actor on the lives of the rest of us. Unfortunately some people will line up firmly behind or opposite Cruises assertions without being informed one way or the other. I'm just glad he didn't implie that Hollywood had weapons of mass destruction.

Read a book.

Is my kid a stinker? Very well could be.

Nope. That's the way kids are supposed to be.

And that's the way normal kids should behave if they're not presented with something more interesting to do. (Obvously not applicable to the hair bow incident...that was just good sense.)

Bigmajic - I don't think anyone is saying that chemical imbalances don't exist. In a world with 6 billion brains and a brain full of chemicals, it is natural to have a percentage of the population born with chemical imbalances. My post said, "Yes, some are born with different chemical balances..." For those people medication can be helpful. Gratefully, that is the case with your wife. For others it can be a temporary disorder brought on by stress, environment, etc. No amount of drugs is going to permanently fix those problems. But watching one of disjecta's videos might help.

The "hidden truth" about the nature of the universe is taught in a series of Operating Thetan levels (eight in all), for which the initiate needs to be thoroughly prepared. In the OT levels, Hubbard describes various traumas commonly experienced in past lives. He explains how to reverse the effects of such traumas by "running" various Scientology processes, and he describes how the problems arose in the first place.

Most famously, those who reach OT level III will learn about Xenu, the galactic tyrant who stacked hundreds of billions of his frozen victims around Earth's volcanoes 75 million years ago before blowing them up with hydrogen bombs and brainwashing them with a "three-D, super colossal motion picture" for 36 days. The traumatised thetans subsequently clustered around human bodies, in effect acting as invisible spiritual head lice that can only be removed using advanced Scientology techniques.

Reportedly, the cost of reaching OT III approaches $360,000.

Some great posts here!

I agree with a lot of what has been said. Over medication of kids is a problem in the US. I feel the social environment is also to blame which other kids in other countries do not have as much of. Video games, TV, parents never home... these sort of things have a big impact on a persons psychology.

As for medication: It can and does work. Not all the time and not for everyone of course. To deny its usefulness is stupid as is claiming that these anti-psychotic drugs are very dangerous. This is hardly the case. Most people who are placed on medication are placed on medicine that has extremely mild side effects. Nothing much worse than taking medicine for a cold...

Some of the really serious stuff can be problematic, however. The number of people taking these medications are few and the benefits far outweight the consequences. I have an Aunt who is bi-polar. She literally becomes psychotic at times and the only thing that helps her out is medication. While the medication has its side effects, the effects are much better than being dead.

Patrick I think Mr. Cruise said that it (chemical imbalance) doesn't exist.

WARINING THREAD HIJACKING UNDERWAY!

Patrick I have battled our school systems for most of my life. I moved where I live now to try and get my kids into a better school(worked for the most part ). Are parents to blame? Yes. Are teachers at fault? Yes. The local schools didn't observe Martin Luther Kings birthday as a Holiday because they didn't have but a few black students.(what kind of warped message does that send) They suspended my nephew 45 days for taking an over the counter medication for relief of a shoulder injury suffered in the mornings football practice. I was able to get the suspension reduced by fighting the school board and this illegal suspension policy. Turns out you can't suspend someone over ten days without due process.(much more to this) Anyway after they fought me at every turn(and accused me of playing lawyer(guilty)) they wound up thanking me for making them aware and the suspension policy has since been changed. They now observe the MLK Holiday because the students protested.

The problem with our society in general is parenting plain and simple. Take an interest in your kids. Love them first last and always but teach them to respect and treat others with respect. I was raised to believe that my actions reflected on my parents and I think thats true for the most part.(sorry Mom & Dad). I think they have to share the credit and some of the blame for the rotten rascal they raised. Now having said that, when you reach adulthood you can overcome or give in to your circumstance. Whatever it may be.

END OF THREAD HIJACKING

But that's what Tommy Cruise MD said. "There's no such thing as a chemical imbalance."

vj - Sorry, I thought his comment was directed at people posting on this thread. Nobody here is saying chemical imbalances don't exist. Wouldn't low blood sugar be a chemical imbalance? What does Tom have to say about that? What about not enough Oxygen in the lungs or brain, ...that's a pretty serious chemical imbalance.

magic - I agree with your parenting comments, 100%. BUT I purposely didn't comment on parenting because I am not a parent. I find it odd to comment on things I know very little about. I am, however, a teacher (well, not really - but Thai people think I am) and have dated numerous teachers, so the education system (I feel) I'm qualified to complain about. What you did (with the school) was the right thing. The school was wrong and sometimes people will continue to do the wrong thing until good people speak up. :)

When you've seen how other countries (very different form our own) do things you can really see how well and how bad we have it back home. Sometimes I find myself trying to change the Thai education system. Being an American I have this overwhelming need to fix things that aren't really broken. Hmmm "Different" doesn't necessarily mean "wrong." I am instead focusing on more important things. Helmets. Nobody can argue about that. Especially if you usee how Thai teenagers drive.

How well we have it here is a relative term; its a viel that's all.

"Compared to some ****-ass third world cess pool; things aren't bad here in the States."

Why? Cause we have t.v.'s and fast food? The older I get the more I realize how screwed up it is here; the government is a lie; the elections are fixed; the economy is on the verge of imploding. Pffft. Another conversation.

I think the underlining point is that Drugs are not the Fast Fix. Of course people have chemical inbalances but let's not jump to conclusions and start handing out Prozac. Instead of trying to help people the Doctor's play Trick or Treat; it makes their job easy and the Drug companies RICH RICH RICH beyond belief.

It is sad and Cruise is speaking truthfully and props to him for having the balls to say what he wantsa instead of acting like some puppet movei star.

Chemical imbalance....

no such thing.

Thanks Pookie :)

I think Shaw said it best. So I wont even paraphrase. Just read his post.

Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. Even Tommy Cruise, M.D. You can do research, or maybe you can live through some of it and walk in the shoes of someone else, and then form your opinion. Cruise is speaking the truth as far as his own reality is concerned. May not be mine, or anyone else's. Psychotherapy and/or psychopharmaceuticals can be huge in treatment courses for people who need it. But as with any good thing, if misused or abused, it has the potential to do more harm than good. If I remember the news clip correctly, Tom said that (using my own words here) psychiatry was a crock and pills dont help. I dont agree. I jsut think that drs who are quick to diagnose/treat can be a problem. And school systems that can tell a parent that their child must be placed on meds or be taken out of mainstream classes is just straight up wrong.

Psychotherapy helped me tremendoulsy when I was blindsided with one too many body shots from this life. And as for my daughter, she will never fit into the mold people want her to, but she thinks for herself. And I would rather have a teen who challenges everything she's told than one that swallows everything she is hand-fed.

Matt Lauer is ALWAYS an asshole. He's always abrasive, a know it all, and usually pisses off whoever he's interviewing. He ALWAYS interupts, and treats everyone like he's superior to them. He acts like he's some kind of hard news "hound", when he's really just an obnoxious, no news, asshole. Why NBC keeps him is totally beyond me. Not that I generally care one way or another what the political/social views of "movie stars" or sports figures are, (who cares?) Matt Lauer seems to always bring out the worst in everyone.

What are you talking about?

He was only asking Tom Cruise for clarification throughout the whole interview. I think Cruise interrupted Lauer more than the other way around. And how exactly does he "treat everyone like he's superior to them"? I've never been a big fan of Lauer, since I rarely watch the show, but I believe Lauer said and did nothing wrong in this interview.

I must admit, when I read about this, I was thinking; "why are they baggin' on ol' Cruise?" But there really isn't an excuse for the things he said in the interview. He's a nice guy and is pretty passionate about life, but he really ought to stick to defending the world.

I don't know about you guys but I don't care anything about these celebrities love life, etc. Except for Jessica Alba. ;)

Come on

Lauer was being a pompus (sp?) ass. Did you even watch the interview? I dont know about Lauers previous exploits but in this interview he is being an asshole. Im surprised Cruise didnt reach across and ***** slap him.

It starts with "Tom, what has Katie Holmes brought that the past has not?" and Tom say's "Matt, I don't wan't to compare thing's..." and Matt comes in with "Yeah. but, but, but......" and Tom continues on as Matt is like "****"

Lauer is not at all 'Mellow as Yelllow' during this interview. I don't know about phychiatry but I have met 2 people in my life that were supposed 'phd's' and they were as ****ed as you can get. Come on; we're talking HEAD MONKEY'S here.

This ude is asked and he answer's and everyone is pissed. Ask me what I think of you and let's see your response, ya know? The interview is completely edited; watch and listen again for pause and relfect.

I like what he says "All it does is mask the problem, It does not get to the problem..." This is true to me. It does not get to the problem at all. It's a ****ing cocktail solution.

Matt keeps saying "Well, Tom... You are saying.........." and Tom is like "no, no, no I am not...."

Tom says "For me........"

Tom says "Matt, you are syaing that I can't discuss this?"

Tom say's "Matt, for my life.................."

ANd Tom has a point "MAtt, do your ****ing research dude. You're a glorified reporter (yeah, right) on the Today Show."

And then Matt says "Tom, you are telling me, you're experiences with the people I know, which are ZERO, are more imporatn than my expericens..."

HE DIDNT SAY THAT.

And then out of nowhere MATT says "I repspect your opinion in this; would you like more people to understand SCIENTOLOGY?"

Come on; dude was an asshole

Come on guys...

One guy thinks he's important because he's in the movies (also known as playing make-believe).

The other guy thinks he's important because he's on TV (talking about people who play make-believe).

What makes what either one of them has to say, of any importance?

Just because people recognise you, it doesn't make what comes out of your mouth mean anything.

I think Matt does protest to much! He is a user and likes his crutch. I can say this because I grew up with mentally unstable people. Tom Rocks! and I'm glad he is a big enough star to not be afraid.

Jesus Christ Pookie, I wish more people understood that. Sadly they don't and the words of an uneducated celebrity often holds more weight with some people than all the facts, figures and statistics in the world.

And Tom is not right. I worked in psych wards for years, and yes I saw people overly and improperly medicated, but I also saw people helped by the right medication, in the right dosage for the proper period of time. It's not the science that is incorrect, but the application at times. FWIW, i got out of the field because of the frustration involved in trying to get people the help they need. I'm no rah rah fan of psychiatry, but there are proven medical uses for psychotropic and neuroleptic medications. Antidepressants are prescribed far too often, ritalyn has become like candy for some kids, and our fast-food, instant gritification lifestyles expect an immediate fix to a problem. All that is true, but that doesn't mean there is no such thing as a chemical imbalance.

BTW, if you have any interest at all in psych, read a book called "Freudian Fraud" by E Fuller Torrey. I don't agree with everything in it, but's pretty eye-opening.
