I've got a brand new Cartoni Focus 101 set of sticks that I'm trying to figure out how to pack for a flight. The bag the set came with seems okay but needless to say I'm a little paranoid. Any suggestions?
I don't know how tall the sticks are, but I'm a big fan of the dosckocil cases. They are like a pelican case for half the price. They make a golf case that should go for $60
I'm traveling to Guatemala next week. My strategy is to pack the tripod inside its bag, and pack that tripod bag inside one of those HUGE duffle bags--surrounding it with a thick layer of clothing and other soft stuff. With the right amount of padding, everything should be fine.
For the DVX & audio gear, I picked up a Kata Panda backpack that will be my carry-on. Love it!
Those Doskocil cases will also hold a couple of light stands + grip heads and arms in addition to the tripod bag (with my Bogen 525/503 tripod kit anyway). A little bubble wrap around the stands keeps everything stable. Can't beat it for 60 bucks. Good call j.

Buy a cut of PVC pipe in the appropriate diameter.
That will house the tripod within its its bag.
You should also be able to find covers to seal the pipe at the estremities.
The whole setup would probably cost less than $20.
SKB out of The OC (Orange County, CA) makes a very nice line of clamshell golf cases. They guarantee the case with a $500 contents policy and the latches are user replacable.
We pack our Bogen 516, sticks, spreader and up to four light stands in one case. A little bubble-wrap around the light stands keeps them from playing too rough with the tripod or vice versa.
Less than $100 from Billy Bob's Bass World or other fine outdoor enthusiast / golf shop spot.
I have been going over what to do with my tripod. I have carried it on in the past, but have added a light stand and boom mic stand. Guess it's time to check it in and pack a soft bag in my suitcase to caryy when in country.
