I spent the weekend testing out my new AF100. After initial disappointments with running into banding and excessive noise. I finally found the settings I need to avoid such problems. I can now say that I'm very happy with the camera!

Shot with a Canon 10-22mm and Lumix 14-140mm.

Music is Mozart's Requiem Mass in D Minor.

Magnificent. The shot with the bird at 2:00 literally sent a chill down my spine. It's interesting to think how differently this would feel if you had chosen another genre of music to back it up.

I was changing settings throughout the shoot but one thing I did do is stay away from the "cine" settings. Too much noise and banding.

This is some of the best AF100 footage I've seen. You have a good eye and a perfect sense for exposure. Some people would have wanted more light on the guys on the beach. Instead, you made the right call by keeping the overall image in control. Nice.

Thanks Steja, yes, exposure always comes first for me especially with the AF100 and its highlight issues. Besides, silhouettes are beautiful! :)

There was definitely some grading, some more than others obviously. One test I wanted to do specifically was see how much I could push the colors before the codec fell apart. Happy to say, it held up pretty well considering its 8-bit nature.

Nice stuff Marlon, as usual.

What settings did you find help you reduce the banding, etc..?

I guess that makes sense. The less latitude/range in camera, the less you would see the gradations in luma levels.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna have to make it look good at least somewhat in-camera. I see too much issues trying to achieve a "super-flat" image because that look doesn't push very well in post.

I'm finding B.Press to be great in a lot of situations but outside in varying levels of light/shade I think it's crushing things too much at times. I want to keep knee so the cine gammas are out, but I'm trying to see which ones besides those that aren't B.Press would still afford me a similar image without crushing as much.

Lowest noise gammas in order are B.Press, Cine-V, Low, HD Norm, SD Norm, High, Cine-D.

If I'm willing to give up the knee, I think Cine-V doesn't crush as much as B.Press but keeps the clean feel B.Press has. It's possible that in shots where sky isn't seen that Cine-V is a good choice and in areas where the knee is best and banding could happen more I could swap to B.Press. The other option is using something like LOW which would afford more latitude but control with negative master ped would let me dial in how much of the shadow end I want brought down. Those seem to be my only options if I want to stay with the cleaner gammas.
