P90X and FWIW

The carbs are important... but you need to keep a few things in mind...

Carbs are fast burn or right to storage (fat).

You NEED carbs in your diet, but depending on how much weight you want to loose you'll modify modify modify. Because 170 was my goal, my calories were 2500 and carbs were 2 a day. This meant an english muffin in the AM and bread for lunch. I'd stay away from CARBS after 3pm (again... at least until you get your metabolism up) unless you are doing your workouts late.

Also -- the recovery drink is HEAVY in carbs so that gives you something. If you don't drink it (and I often didn't on days when I felt like it wasn't all that muscle blaster... then you can add another one to two carbs. (remember, nuts don't count as protein... but CARBS!!)

Multi-vit. Yeah... better safe, for me. I like the idea of eating them - but YOU NEED FAT IN YOUR DIET to break them down and use effectively!!

Also... 20gram Protein bars were a staple of my day.

Breakfast:
5 egg whites and one whole egg
English Muffin
8oz Fruit Juice

10am
Cup of Cottage Cheese
Coffee

Noon
Fruit
Salad with 3oz of meat - MINIMAL DRESSING

3pm
Protein Shake or 20g Protein Bar

6pm - Dinner
Well rounded dinner... 6oz of meat with veggies and fruit

9pm - If I was still hungry (craving) I'd have another protein shake (half) or a scoop of all natural peanut butter (early days even 3 m&ms!!! Nice snack and stopped craving.

Toss all the chips today

Toss any pretzels you might have around

Fun times await.

No soda = no fun.

During day 3 & 4, I could have been a prime candidate for Monsterfest due to the lack of caffeine. Though, after drinking all this water, my new hobby is peeing.

NO KIDDING!! Kids got to the point... "Daddy, when we get to Target the bathroom's on the left"

Gah.

I've been shifting my diet as of late. Partially because I now have high cholesterol (awesome).

It's tough to figure out what to eat. The workout stuff is around the corner. Since I don't do any sports now, it's tough to stay motivated.

Good luck with the cholesterol... amazing what working out will do for it though.

If you can have it tested for free... do it after each month of solid working out. I dropped 50 points on my bads (getting me out of the warning zone!!)

I had an unrelated appointment with my family doctor last week. I told him I was getting ready to start a fitness program and wanted to get a baseline, so he ran a full panel (diabetes, cholesterol, etc). Just waiting to hear all the results ... but will be nice to have to compare at 3/6/9 months into the program.

I start week 5 today. P90X is by far the most awesome butt kicking workout routine I have ever done. Period. I never thought I could get that kind of workout with a few dumbells and a pullup bar. I'm getting in better shape than when I first started so my calorie burn has slowed down a bit, but when I first started I was between 700 and 1000 calories burned for the hardest workouts. Seriously intense. I've worked out pretty steadily since I was a kid, but I tend to plateau, stop working out almost completely, then gradually get back in to it. It's just hard when you don't get results that you think match what you're putting in to your routines. Let me tell you, this is not the case with P90X.

I did my day 1 photos and was horrified. I don't know about the rest of you, but my mirror lies to me. I still see that cocky 21 year old who was in great shape when I look in the mirror. Photos, it seems, do not lie. I wasn't fat or anything, at least I didn't show it the way some people do. More just no muscle mass to speak of. Just a sad pasty doughy 35 year old.

I eat fairly healthy already, but I'm more inclined to watch my portions and make sure I'm getting all the different food groups when I'm following a plan like this. After 4 weeks I'm sleeping less, have more energy, and I'm starting to see some definition. I'm waaaaaay too embarrased to put my day 1 pics up now. But assuming that I continue to see changes and feel good about my progress, I'll post a day 1/day 90 comparison just to help motivate some of you others who may be thinking about giving it a shot. I promise you, if you do you won't regret it!!!

You're the MAN, Slimchrisp!!!

Week 2 were my best before/after pics. Most hugest difference (sorry). But when I saw day 90 vs day 1 I was amazed. I still see mr 25 in my mirror. When people tell me they're 40, I think... holy ****, do I look THAT bad??

Keep pressing play!!!

For me it's the 70+ year olds who walk around bent over into a question-mark shape (Larry King, looking at you sideways).

I figure if I want to stand straight when I'm that age, I had better start underwriting it now...

hey mike you're in dayton? never noticed that on your signature. i just moved from columbus ohio back to hawaii.

Larry -- If you're lactose intolerant, avoid the recovery drinks that use whey in them. I didn't realize that whey breaks down into lactose (or somehow manifests as lactose), as used Accelerade for four weeks before the lactose built up and made me feel awful for almost a week. I'm just intolerant enough that I can use regular milk on my cereal, but won't drink a glass of it. Been using chocolate soy milk instead for recovery (and dessert at dinner). I like Organic brand the best, which I think might be Tom Thumb/Safeway's store brand, although I'm not positive on that.

good to know about Whey ... now that you mention it, it makes sense ... but I hadn't thought about it before. I checked the ingredients for the BeachBody brand recovery drink and I think they were using soy, but I didn't check for Whey. I'll check now to be sure.

Terry - thanks for the info on that app ... I saw it referenced once before, but had forgotten about it. I'll def load it up now.

What most such products use is the whey protein - but even that may contain traces of lactose. If you're very sensitive, it's a problem.

That's very good to know ... and may explain the times when I suffer the effects though I didn't think I consumed any dairy. I'm fairly sensitive, but the Lactaid pills seem to work pretty effectively for me.

Yep, just checked the recover drink ingredients ... the second ingredient is "Whey Protein Concentrate"

yeah -- moved here from Northern California (dang military!!). We love it though. Not NorCal - but more house in a lovely neighborhood!!

As for "Lose it!" -- what a great little app!! Wonderful for finding and keeping track of calories. Has just about anything you need in its database. If not there... just add it.
