P90X and FWIW

Hey all...

Some of you have known me for MANY years. I joined the first day I got my DVX back in May of 2004. Some of you've seen my kids grow and the company name change from TwoBoys Productions to THREEBoys Productions!

I've seen this forum change a lot over the years too. Back when all bought the DVX new it was the most expensive thing you could get from Panasonic before you jumped another $55k. It was a very innovative community.

That innovation continues to this day... only it has passed me by with HD etc. It has also changed to where more and more people are finding the price point of the 'pro-sumer' cameras attractive.

I still find me contributing to the FCP forum... which gets me to...

Not only did I see this forum changing... I was getting frustrated by the change. Sometimes it came out in MASSIVELY INAPPROPRIATE rants. Usually directed at people who were entering the field just as I had done 5 years ago... or anyone who hated Indy4.

Point is... though I didn't know it -- that was the tip of a larger spiral I was taking. Hard to say where it started.

But I digress...

A friend of mine from DC sent me a before/after pic of him doing P90x. Holy cow! I'd put on A LOT of BAD weight in my death spiral -- I needed to do something about it.

LITTLE DID I KNOW... how much doing exercise (ANY EXERCISE) helps with your frame of mind.

I know some of you are in DIRE straights... job prospects... future after school... kids... wife... etc.

Get out and DO SOMETHING!

I'm not here to PROMOTE p90x. I'm NOT a coach, I don't make ANY money... I won't EVER be a coach... BUT:

If you want help getting started or have any questions about the program I'd be happy to answer them.

Here are my disturbing pics... BEWARE... though not gratuitous, they do acknowledge that some men have breasts - oh yes, and wear underwear.

I've just passed day 50 entering my final phase. Then I'll do it again... and again...

Changed my life!! Changed my life.

Yoga is for MEN!

PS... there is a periodical workout thread here... but haven't seen any activity since 2008!

I've heard that P90X is a supreme butt-kicker and that you need to already be at a decent fitness level to do it. Is this true? A friend of mine tried it and sold it, although he did manage to find other ways of getting in fit in his 41st year.

Also: HOLY CRAP! NICE JOB! Maybe I'll give it try after all.

Also also: Raiders is my favorite movie, but come on, Indy4 blew. (Ducks)

You DO NOT need to be in supreme shape to start. There is a pretest that you should take. IF YOU FAIL you should see your doctor before starting just to let them know.

It is 6 days of an hour a day a week for 12 weeks - so yes, in that sense it kicks your butt.

BUT -- if you press play when they tell you... you EAT what they tell you -- that's all you need to do.

There is an AbRipper section that you do for 15 minutes 3 times a week. The first 2 weeks I'd just be laying on the ground doing 1 or 2 of the 25 reps he does. I just had NOTHING in my core. Then, something happened and now I'm doing 15.

I'm in an Over40 support network online for this... a guy 55 is KICKING MY BUTT!! You should see HIS before/after pics.

-- and thanks!! Also, no ducking needed.

I've been using Scooby's site for my current workouts, which are going okay. I think having to follow along with someone would both help me do what I should and keep me entertained.

You've watched his video clips, right? Also, the info on nutrition is a good resource.

Not trying to sleight P90X (or any other workout), just want to point out that one can achieve great results with information that is readily available for free.

Point is --

You might not feel clinically depressed. Doing a workout routine is one of the BEST non-medical ways to get yourself healthy.

I don't care where you do it. Or what format you use.

P90x is a great PACKAGE deal... and all things considered very cheap. All I buy from them is the recovery drink. Personally, CRACK for me!!

Tony Horton is a master motivator. If you can sit down and follow another plan do it!

Again, not SELLING P90x. Just saying it is working for me.

Totally agree with Mike here - I was in a slump earlier this year that just was dragging me down. Started making a point to practice my steadicam work at least an hour a day and do scooby's workout (for beginners!) and I've got a lot more energy and am just happier over all. Also much more likely to take on new things and kick their ass. Or at least try :)

Thanks to exercising as well as improving my diet I'm in post on my first short and pre-pro on my second. The more I do the busier I get and the more I want to do and the more I get done and its just fantastic. Way more productive and happier than I've been in a long time...

I have the regular P90...which makes me sore enough. Ive often thought I should graduate to P90x...

Regardless, OP is right...if you put the disc in your player, the hard part is done :)

My wife doesn't want me to get in shape.

Not kidding.

She's already pissed that I lost 35 pounds this past year. (Did it the hard way...stopped eating potato chips.)

If I start getting muscles, she'll think I'm gearing up to step out on her. :)

I'll start week 6 of my second round on Monday. I finally look like most of the "before" pix in their ads. Yeesh. It works, but it's a beating.

I was supposed to start Day 1 today, but due to a few circumstances outside of my control it's been pushed back one week.

So, this time next week I'll be on the P90X bandwagon.

The biggest challenge for me will be figuring out the nutrition part ... but I'm excited. Not looking to become the next Conan the Barbarian, just want to be able to see my belt buckle when I look down, or to be able to tie my shoes without cutting off my air supply, or keep up with my young, spry nephews playing a few rounds of tag or hide 'n seek without getting winded.

And definitely looking for the energy boost of being in better physical shape and the natural anti-depressant of a good workout.

My trainer seems reasonably impressed with the P90X program, although that's not what he's doing, with me.

Good LUCK!! I just started the P90x+ routines the results of me going thru 90x were amazing. Went from 194 to 172ish and never felt better. Took a few months off still doing a video here and there. Frankly, after 90 days of the same jokes I was a bit fed up. For my 45th birthday Linda bought me the + vids. Now I'm back on!! Mid first week and FIRED up!

Larry -- the nutrition is A MUST!! If you want to email me I'll make sure I stay on you. I'm not a coach and I don't get any money for it.

The key for this program to work is to take the calorie intake seriously -- 2500 -- 3000 etc and EAT THAT MUCH!! You must (MUST) fuel your body to burn the fat. Once you convince your body that you WON'T STARVE it it will just burn whatever you put in there. You'll eat 6 times a day NEVER getting hungry.

Now, what you use for fuel is important too. The first 30 days you'll want to limit carbs.

Also a few other things...

NO SODA -- diet or regular... NO FRIGGIN SODA!
Skim Milk ONLY -- just do it! Soy milk would be even better for 1 month
EASY on the coffee -- NONE... or only one small regular coffee a day
STAY away from anything that says ENRICHED FLOUR... NO WHITE BREAD - whole grain only!! Wheat maybe.
Commit yourself to Tony. Do what he says and you won't be Arnold... but you will be more fit.

OH... the only other stuff I buy from Beachbody is the Recovery Drink... A MUST in my opinion. The goal of the workouts is to remove ALL SUGARS from your blood and muscle tissue (same thing??) this stuff is some of the best stuff you can put back into your body letting it rebuild.

A good ALL NATURAL multi-vitamin is also a must -- buy that wherever. Oh, and since I'm mid 40s I take a Glucosamine helper.

Again... email me and I'll help motivate you thru!!

michael.mench@mac.com

Or not.

Good luck,

Mike

Mike thanks, I may take you up on that.

But just to clarify ... what I meant about the diet being the biggest challenge, is just that I need to sit down with all the information and figure out how to make it work for me, how to adjust my normal eating habits into smarter eating habits and make them become long lasting habits. I don't foresee having any problems with it, but I imagine it will take the first couple weeks to get it all figured out.

The No Soda will be hard ... I like Pepsi ... but I've already been trying to switch a lot of my soda consumption out for either Water or Iced Tea (no sugar).

I'm lactose intolerant, so it will be soy milk or no milk ... don't drink coffee, so no problem there.

My biggest downfall will be bread ... I LOVE bread ... but I know I will need to severly limit my bread (carb) intake.

I have several family members who have already been through the program and they all highly recommended the recovery drink ... so I have ordered that. I think the rest I can do on my own, but that seemed like a reasonable item to get from the beachbody people directly.

Are you sure the multi-vitamin is a must? I ask because I was listening to a doctor on the radio the other day who said they've done a lot of tests and found that the vitamin supplements we take are worthless. That we get 0 benefit in our bodies from them. That the only vitamins that affect us are what we get from our diet. I need to do some research on that and see if there's any validity to that or not

FWIW we're on what they apparently call a 'paleolithic' diet.

No grains. No dairy. No bread, rice, or pasta.

Fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, nuts and meat/fish is about it (in other words, ditch everything that the last +/- 5000 years' effort developed for the purpose of feeding you, and start eating like Cro-Magnon Man).

Can't speak for everyone, but it sure has worked, for us. Lean muscle's up, fat's vanishing, skin and hair look good, plus I always had trouble with acid reflux+indigestion and after the first week I haven't had a single incident with it, at all...

...my wife is Filipina so you can imagine how tough it was, giving up rice...

No soda = no fun.

During day 3 & 4, I could have been a prime candidate for Monsterfest due to the lack of caffeine. Though, after drinking all this water, my new hobby is peeing.
