P2CMS database creation failure

I had a hard drive conk out on this MBP back a while ago and once I replaced it I reinstalled most of my software. Also took the opportunity, with added disk space, to do a BootCamp installation of WindowsXP.

Of course, I forgot to install P2CMS until, well, now. (In this case I'm using P2CMS 1.4...the latest one I found on Panasonic's site.)

P2CMS cannot create a database on my drive. It'll create a database on, for example, a USB memory key, but that ain't what I'm trying to do.

I can't seem to find any information on these egregious database creation failures so I'm leaning towards believing that my BootCamp installation may have something to do with it.

Does anyone have any advice for me?

After much consideration, I appear to have sorted out my problems myself. Whether it was related to BootCamp or not, I have no idea.

The read/write permissions for the system drive were out of whack. By this I mean that the admin had read/write access but others had only read access. I'm not sure why P2CMS would be run as anything but a process started by the admin user (me) but adjusting the read/write permissions fixed the problem.

makes sense....repair your permissions before and after every app you install on the MBP....been doing this for 6 years on a power mac and never had a crash or problem :)

I agree that it does make sense...now.

But this was above and beyond the standard permissions repair. My drive was set for read/write access for the admin user (me) but the P2CMS application didn't seem to pay attention to that. It could only read the drive and if it can't write to the the drive, no database.

My solution is almost more of a workaround until I figure out, if I can, what's really going on.

(I did a permissions repair early on and it didn't appear to catch this 'problem.')

I had the same problem and a repair permissions in Disk Utility didn't do it for me. It is indeed a permissions problem though. Here's how I sorted it myself:

Open Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app and type the following, you will probably be prompted for your password when using sudo. This basically creates a directory in the root of your MacintoshHD that we will give your user permissions on.

sudo mkdir /my_p2cms_database_dir

Now you need to change ownership of the new directory we just created. You will need to use your OS user for this, mine happens to be 'daniel' If you're not sure, type a quick 'whoami' into the terminal.

sudo chown daniel:staff /my_p2cms_database_dir

You should be good to go, all you need to do is type "my_p2cms_database_dir" as the database in P2CMS and you're good to go.

Hope this helps someone out who isn't too handy with unix.

I do not consider myself a super computer savvy production person. However, I did this and it worked beautifully. Thank you.
