HPX250: P2CMS clips show allot of cmos effects but in NLE nothing. . .

So why is it that my clips look bad in P2CMS but when I import them there is almost no rolling shutter effect? Why is this?

FWIW, My guess is it's not rolling shutter you're seeing, but rather laggy playback. P2CMS may not be efficient enough to play smoothly on your machine. I've seen similar effects with other programs in the past.

I would never judge quality of any sort unless the camera output is played to a decent known monitor, PC players/viewers are always iffy and untrustworthy in my opinion.. Once you have seen it properly you can have complete trust in the camera.

I concur with the above two posters, the on-camera VF and monitor can lie, and so can playback software running on unoptimized code. P2CMS is only there so you can do things like set memos, add metadata, and so on...

P2 CMS for Mac and Windows have differences. I found CMS for Mac to be much more stable when playing back full AVC-I 100 clips on a typical 8 and 12-core Mac Pros - 2011 generation w/ ATI GPU. MBPro is a bit jerky, but acceptable. The Windows ver is pretty bad as it is based on hardware's performance. I use the Windows CMS for fast offloading to local HD. It allows 2 concurrent copying vs the Mac of only 1. There's NO MD5 verification though. Confident playback on it is pretty much useless as it can't handle it. This is due to the slow CPU on the Intel netbook. I tend to stay away fr NLE app, especially Premiere CS5 & CS6 to preview the clip. It writes it own temp folder in the P2 content itself. So make sure to set it to read only or copy to another drive. Who would need these extra useless temp file in the VIDEO folder? This is very disturbing. Adobe should put it somewhere else and not the same folder as P2. Maybe I need to look closer to the pref of the temp cache location, but so far it's not a good thing. However, CS6 installs a MXF viewer display driver that allows native preview of all the P2 MXF clips. Unfortunately, only video can be seen and it doesn't properly scale to square 16x9 pixel ratio. So in Snow Leopard or Lion, u can click on the VIDEO folder and open it right away w/ out going to CMS for preview. FCP X will require transcode. In the end, P2 CMS is the safest way to quickly verify the content shot. No temp file creation, no transcoding needed. Pure preview.

Thanks all for the info. I use it on a MAC, 8 core 2011 machine with 32GB ram. I have the footage offloaded to a internal SATA raid footage is 1080 AVC-100 at 60i. Just seems funny the color is great most of the clips look like jello with any movement of the camera, but once I transcode into FCP its glass smooth. I started using P2 more since I have been reading the stories of losing data with just drag and drop, so I would rather be safe than sorry. I only noticed it because I was shooting a audition for a play and I was in the center of the room and had to move allot. I also used DRS because of the windows, dark areas of the stage, and I have to say I LOVE IT (just wished it worked on all settings) allowed me to get shots that would have been blown out or too dark.
So one agian thanks all.

Does FCP still have to transcode? I thought they fixed that problem. I stopped using FCP and went to GrassValley Edius with native editing in real time. It's such a waste of hard drive space to transcode everything. I love how the 250 works great with Edius.

FCP 10.0.5 does require Import Footage fr the P2. No direct native P2 editing. There it goes and transcode to Pro Res HQ or Proxy. On the other hand, Adobe CS5 or 6, there's no transcode needed. You can edit directly fr. the raw P2 files. However, CS5-6 add their own temp file that Adobe wanted. It's usually their Audio Confirmation... I usually make another same P2 copy to avoid this increase in size. And the other problem w/ CS5-6 is that all of the footage MUST be the same codec. You can't mix DVCPRO HD & AVC-I 100 or AVC-I 100 & AVC-I 50. It must be identical to get real time performance. Nevertheless, it's the fastest native P2 I've experienced besides Avid Media Composer. It's a tough call when you have mixed media footage fr. Go Pro, Red, hd dslr like the Canon 5d, 7d... I still prefer FCP X most of the time due to its exceptional ability to handle mixed formats such as the h.264 dslr and AVC-I 100 codec on the same time line. I use dSLR for special POV and car mounts. It's still very viable over the bigger HPX250 in form factor.

Personally I don't find the transcoding to be a big burden unless it's a semi live or super fast turnaround news type of editing job. I actually prefer to leave the raw P2 for archival purpose and the transcoded AVC-I .MOV format for other apps to use - mostly After FX, Premiere CS5-6, FCP 7 or FCP 10.0.5.

I mix every type of footage on the same Premiere CS6 timeline, from R3D files to avc intra 100, gopro, contour, Canon hdslr, hacked GH2 avchd, prores etc. of different source sizes and framerates and have real time performance all of the time at full 1080 resolution. With the Cuda I'm even loading effects on R3D 4k and all of the rest of the shots and getting smooth playback. And I'm on a fairly humble hackintosh. I'm seriously stoked on CS6. What are you running, lonewolf?

The latest generation of MPros don't have NVida GPU. They are all going to to ATI. I don't have accelerated CUDA. But I recall back in CS5 w/ Cuda, I still get limited performance when doing mixed format editing. It was the long audio confirm and limited flexility to edit on workstation and laptop that turn me off to Premiere. Cannot have a situation where the exact same ext hd is used and Prem CS5 & 6 have to audio reconfirm every time. Premiere Pro support couldn't help me out either. It's so annoying. I'm not a heavy Premiere Pro CS 5-6 user. It just doesn't workout well. Only use it for super fast turn around project and that's it. Mostly use Adobe After FX and Photoshop. Premiere CS6 is an added bonus that's in standby, backup use only.

Final Cut 7 doesn't have any of that annoying audio confirmation issue whenever I load up. I can edit pretty much anywhere on any laptop, desktop, and other's colleague Mac and it doesn't do any silly audio confirming baloney that slows everything down.
