P2 workflow - simply defined

Has anyone tried to delete the P2 files from a Mac? I downloaded several P2 cards to an iBook and then later moved the files over to my G5 Quad and imported into FCP. Workflow was seamless.

However, when I put the content folder and .text file (the two things that you have for every P2 card downloaded) in the trash and then tried to empty the trash niether Mac let the trash be emptied. The problem is the files are locked. Simple enough solution for the text files (one per P2 card). Just click on the file, hit command/i (get info) and unlock the file then it will empty in the trash. BUT, the content folder has 5 folders in it (named audio, video, etc). In each one of them are hundreds of LOCKED things that need to be individually unlocked. This of course would take hours/days for just one card.

Has anyone else encoutered this and if so do you by chance have a solution?
the problem is the text file. You can delete the actual mxf files. I just left the text files on the P2 and let the camera delete/up date that. no biggie...didnt interfere with re using the cards. I deleted all cards with the laptop.

PKraft, Thanks much regarding trashing the files! Actually you need to hold down the option key as you "empty trash" not while dragging into trash and it works like a charm.

Just wondering Which Version of Final Cut Pro are all you guys using to transfere from p2 / HVX to Laptop? And how would a G4 733 work for just transfereing and creating the quicktime files, for use on another more powerful Mac?

FCP just announced a new version about two weeks ago that includes all sorts of updates for the P2/HVX. So you should only be using the very latest revision of FCP5.

Nick, sorry, yes of course. Using Macs since 1984 everything goes off hand almost automatically.
Or am I simply getting old?

Barry,
I think the latest version is 5.04.
I want to purchase 5.0 in the stores now,
because Final Cut will only be sold in the Studio Set starting very soon. (the Studio set requires a faster processor than the 733G4)
If I upgrade to the latest revision of FCP 5, I don't know for sure if it will run on the old 733 G4 I have.
I need a version of Final Cut Pro that will run on a 733 G4 and also use with the HVX200. (I think 5.0 is the box now at stores)

All I really want to do is train myself on the 733 G4 and do some simple editing, even if its on Standard Definition files. I would like to be able to strip the MXF files down in quicktime and be able to view HD files.
It would really be nice if I could use the 733 G4 and Final Cut to transfere the MXF files to quicktime or some file format that I could then use on my more powerful Duel Proc PC and Vegas.
Yes---I'm still trying to figure out a way to use vegas, but also begin my transitionn to the Apple. I really don't need to work in High Def right now, Just using the better quality SD that DVC50 and 100 give would keep me busy for a while.
It looks like waiting till the end of March to purchase any new computer (Power Book Intel machine)is the smart thing to do.
I'm pretty sure the HVX will be out soon,
but a good NLE solution will take a little longer
Well I'm beginning to ramble now....
I'm just trying to figure out what is the best and least expensive way to make the transition from the DVX to HVX.
Your input has been very helpful.

I'm sure the 733 would probably work to import MXF's and convert to QT's... wouldn't it? I'm not a Mac user yet, but if your 733 can run 5.0.4 at all, then it should work for that task.

On Apple's web site they say 867mhz is required.
But on the FCP5 Box I read in the Apple store Today says 500mhz processor is required. This is what got me wondering _I should go ahead and get FCP now before my old 733 G4 becomes too slow for the upgraded FCP 5.0.4.

I know this is all crazy.....I should just take a long nap till April when all of this will be iron out and all the NLEs will be working flawlessly with HVX.

I just ordered FCP studio 5 from MacMall, and they said this is the latest upgrade of FCP but the talk of 5.04 has me wondering if it is? Anyone know?

David

The Studio Box probably does have the latest versions of all the software, but Final Cut Pro 5 by itself can still be bought at the Apple Stores, this version is 5.0 and will have to be upgraded through Apple's site.

From the apple fcp5 page (check 2nd paragraph!):

System Requirements
  • Macintosh computer with a 867MHz or faster PowerPC G4 or G5 processor; not supported on Intel-based Mac computers with Rosetta
  • HD features require 1GHz or faster single or dual processor; authoring of HD DVDs requires a PowerPC G5 processor
I'm basically wanting to do the same as you, Student, and use my current hardware to train myself, and upgrade later. I'll be just barely squeeking past the minimum requirement with my 1ghz 15" powerbook.

David, the version you buy will probably be 5.0. Buy it, put it on your computer, register it and then check for Software Updates and download the free update, no problem. The current rev. level is 5.0.4.

Thanks Tony I saw that but,
on the boxes in the stores I read today the min. requirements are 512 MBs of ram and 500 mhz G4 processor. My question is why does the box say one thing but the web sit says another?

I think the requirements on the web site is refering to the 5.0.4 upgrade. The big question is how far back can you go and still be able to open the MXf files from the HVX200? Thats all I really want to be able to do is create the quicktime files from the MXF files and view the files on the time line in FCP. What is the earliest version of FCP that can do this. And wil a G4 with a 733processor be powerful enough? The box says yes but the web says no. oh well.

Thanks bud.

Different requirements for different applications. DV has lower requirements then HDV or DVCProHD for that matter. If your hardware does not meet those requirements, that does not mean FCP won't start. It will. However, in that special case it may run *a little bit* slow or running an HD clip may be jerky. Keep in mind, though, more RAM greatly helps. The more the better. Your hardware being a few years old, you might find cheap used compatible RAM units at Ebay.
Another thing comes to mind: Minimum requirements are meant to describe the lowest threshold only above which realtime effects do work and the most demanding souce material runs smoothly (i.e. HD and uncompressed). If your Mac is not that fast, you might have to render each or some effect(s) while on a faster machine it is rendered on the fly.

Absolutely not true. There is no increase in Min. Requirements with minor updates and the gap between 5.0 and 5.0.4 is a minor update.

If you want to find out yourself, get someone to send you the content of a P2 card burnt on a DVD and treat yourself a reality check.

Hope this helps.
Best, Pe.
