P2 Window Dubs?

Back in the day we would give DVD TC window dubs with TC numbers supered so that clients/producers could log their footage, and in theory, do a paper edit.

We just got a HVX200. How would you do a Window Dub with this unit recording to P2? Obviously, you could transfer to yet another firewire drive, give the producer P2CMS (only on XP) from Panasonic, and let them log away. But I fear most clients couldnt handle this and now I have to use yet another drive.

We do educational documentaries where shooting 15 hrs of tape is not out of the norm, and for the POST staff, a simple 'play n record' to DVD cat be beat.

Anyone else doing this workflow? What are your thoughts?

You could always "play 'n' record" out to a DVD recorder. Put the timecode display on, pipe the s-video out to the dvd recorder, and play. But that would involve playing back from the P2 cards.

Can your NLE read the original timecode and superimpose it over the video? If so, you could do a similar workflow -- output DV from your timeline to the HVX (or any DV camera) and have it do an on-the-fly conversion to analog, and record on the DVD recorder.

I do exactly what you are proposing but I have a Kona 3 and FCP FCS2 system. The TC filter in FCP is pretty good. But if you don't have a card, you would have to render it all out to DV or whatever output you have, kind of a hassle. Thats what is so great about the Kona, real-time up/down/cross-conversion, I love it.

Under Edius that is trivial -- it has the option of overlaying the original and/or sequence timecode when it outputs, so you don't have to make any changes to your project or add filters.

I was looking at a field camera based answer...Our Avid Media Composer can do this too, however we used to do it with raw tapes so that we could save time and digitize only stuff we would use in the project (no sense digitizing takes that didnt work). However with the P2 workflow, its easy enough to bring everything in to the edit system. Guess I still neeed to wrap my mind around P2 workflow.
