P2 vs. Firestore

We couldn't be sure what happened to the JVC. Things were fine for 4 days and then on the 5th day we have playback issues and glitchy stuff and we were worried we had more problems from other days. We did end up with some corrupted files that I'm not sure why... I wasn't maning the camera most of the time as I was the gaffer on the shoot... but I did see the frustration and anxiety on the DP's face.. and the client and pretty much everyone was held up for about 2 hours during the whole thing. We opted to leave it alone and just let the camera cool down and power up.. and then the playback looked fine... BUT IT WAS NOT REASSURING.. and the DP went hometonight with the need to watch and check 8 hours of footage on tape and firestore to see what could have been...

We didn't switch to the HVX... I brought it along to shoot some B-camera stuff and shoot some slow-motion.... but as the shoot went along it creeped into more and more scenes.. and then when time was limited we did 2 camera coverage of the last major scene...

We compared them a variety of ways. Viewfinder, LCD, and also HD monitor.... on an absolutely beautiful DLP monitor... and yes there is a difference... Stuff on my DELL didn't hold a candle to how things looked on the DLP..> Was simply breaktaking...

We also compared them out of sheer interest and to also see how each handles light.. and color and such. I just feel more and more comfortable in my choice the more I see that lackluster quality from other stuff. If you give me 5 minutes... my kino, arri kit, reflectors and some film gack.. I can really take away all of the noise on the HVX and produce pure GOLD... The HVX is a cinematic camera... The JVC is a great camera for event photgraphy.. but it just doesn't have anything near the MO-JO of the HVX.. when it's light. I'll hopefully get to show some footage or maybe stills at least...

When things are light well... the JVC poops the bed in comparision.. Funny how in pro- JVC and canon propaganda they aren't comparing well light and produced stuff... more of stuff shot from some open window or dark murky office... The JVC might be better in that... but that's not what I'm interested in... I want WOW and HOLY CRAP.. coming out of people mouths.. and with the HVX you get both... With the JVC, you get some of that... but it feels like a bit of a red-headed step child when the HVX is in the room..

By the end of the shoot the DP was talking of buying the HVX... Not the JVC which he loved going into it... which he rented with the idea of buying.... He juumped to the dark side... and thank God he will..

Thanks for the info Justyn. I"m tearing my hair out trying to decide on which camera Hd100 or hvx. I've found some incredibly wonderful footage from both cameras. The idea of archiving to 2 dollar tapes on the hd seems so superior to hard drives I almost went with the hd. Here are some of the things beside the obvious that make me want to go hvx: Image stablizer (I know these aren't usually found on pro cameras but the hvx felt it important enough to keep and I don't see how anyone handholding a camera with any sort of zoom can maintain a steady shot.) . I think about 10 000 of each camera have been sold and there are very few of them for sale used. This tells me people who buy either one of them love them, however there is a passion that owners of the hvx have, that goes far beyond what the hd100 owners have in their forums. (There is one exception though. Some one posted a picture of themself in bed with a hd100.) My favorite footage from the hvx was the basketball game, and my favorite from the hd100 was a motorcycle race on a sunny day. Oh well I'll keep thinking and thinking . . . thanks again

Mind if I ask to see some of the "wonderful" footage from the JVC? I'm not trying to be a cynic but honestly I really havn't seen anything from this camera that really impresses me or seems truly filmic. In the comparisons between it and the HVX, the subjects that were shot were very flat and niether camera produced a very impressive image. I've seen some fantastic stuff come out of an HVX200 in well lit conditions but I've yet to see anything blow me away from the JVC camp. My friend has one and while his footage is quite sharp it doesn't look very filmic or impressive beyond the resolution. I'd reall love to see some of this pretty JVC footage.

me too

papparts (i think thats his name) has put some really nice hd100 footage up. On the jvc site there is a link to some very film like footage done with a 35mm lens adaptor. on the dv forum there is a wonderful clip of a motorcross race which really surprized me as this was footage of some fast moving motorcycles and there has been much talk about how hdv can't handle fast motion. I have seen better video footage from the hvx in this forum, (the basketball footage was amazing) but I haven't seen anything more filmlike than the jvc stuff I've seen. If it's out there, please let me know where it is so I can see it. I really want to get the hvx for a lot of reasons but for me to put up with hard drives and expensive p2 cards, I'd like it to at least out perform the hd 100 with film look.
