p2 viewer warning - copy carfully

Hey all I just wanted to share two really scary things that happened on different gigs using p2 viewer.

On two recent occasions I have had P2 viewer not copy all clips. In both cases it was just one missing clip. I remembered shooting it on the day and back in Avid I could not find it. I went back to the on-set offloads (virtual cards) that were on a portable hard drive and sure enough in both cases there was the missing clip.

My workflow on these went like this.

Offload footage on-set to netbook and portable hard drive. Back at the NLE I used P2 viewer's bin view to mount virtual cards and copy footage to my P2 storage drive (raid 1)
this is nice for consolidating several cards to one so I only have to target one card for AMA workflow in Avid.

On two occasions now I have had a phantom orphaned clip. The clip was not spanned it just did not come over in the bin copy. Now let me say there is a great chance that both times were user error. I really believe that is what it was. It is possible that i did not grab all the clips.

I just wanted to offer the warning to other users. Even if there is no bug or glitch this method of bin copy can introduce some user error and you could end up with missing clips. Its rare but it just happened to me twice.

For mission critical card reformatting offloads I always suggest the ingester in p2 viewer.

Hope that keeps someone else from the near hart attack I just had.

thanks

J
