P2 viewer for PCs

OK I went out and pruchased a laptop yesterday for use in the field.

I loaded on the panasonic P2 software which came with the HVX200. It can read and view from the camera, and also when I put the P2 card in the PCMCIA slot on the laptop.

But I haven't figured out who to view the footage once I have copied the cards content onto the hard drive. Viewing the footage from the card or camera, it stutters terribly, even though its a good spec Toshiba laptop.

So how do I view the footage once I have put it on the hard drive?

Thanks
Steve

Of course. Once loaded and installed, click on the P2 viewer Application and if the card is instlled in the PCMCIA slot it will look for it. You will see in the lower right of the screen that it is loading clips. When loaded it will show all of the picons in the left side of the screen and a big widow on the right side. Explore the buttons under the playback window and you will see that one will make it playback full screen. If you don't have a dual processor on that PC you will have dropped frames but, the frames are there.

Go download and see for yourself.

Best,

Jan

Thanks I have already worked that out, buut what I meant was once I have copied the contents of the P2 card over to the hard drive and removed the p2 card back to the camera. So I would want to view the content once the card is out of the laptop.

Hi Steve,
I believe you need to use the P2 Viewer's Virtual card feature - the help has some details on how to do this, but basically I think it makes a Contents folder on your internal HD appear as a mounted disk to P2 Viewer.

I know the software is not intuitive, but yes you can do this and once the new place has been defined for the clips, you can set it up so that the left windowo has two windows, and you can drag from the card to the drive which is the bottom window. Look in the help area of the site to see if there is something there that will tell you how to set this up.

Best,

Jan

OK thanks Mark that was exactly what I was getting at. I have now sussed it out and have it working. Not the easiest of ways or very clear but I got there.

Its a good spec laptop but still doesnt run the footage very smoothly at all. Lots of dropped frames, but I guess I can live with that.

Cheers for the help Jan and Mark.

Playback P2

Playback P2

Hello Steve, just a quick something which you may or may not have figured out already, once you load the P2 viewer, you can open the .mxf clips with most viewer programs EG: windows media player, power dvd .....
Personally I use a program called BS player, it gives you resolution and framerate information easily and doesn't suck up all your reasources like windows media player. Another thing that may be usefull, you can vary the resolution of the playback if you change the settings in the P2 codec to half or quarter resolution (This reduces stutters).

Great point. I was recently playing around with a media player app called 'Zoom Player':
http://www.inmatrix.com/zplayer
Its the most customizable, format compatible media player I have ever seen on Windows and has much better performance than WMP. For P2 viewing it has a playlist feature which scans folders and allows you to use shortcut keys to quickly move to the next clip. Well worth a look.

Download the latest beta as that has all the fun features:

if you want to see your footage in realtime, install the 30 days trial of canopus "edius"..its worth it and fully working for at least 30 days..this is the way they convinced me...try it!
