P2 Viewer displays wrong format

Hello,

I recently purchased the HVX and a P2 store with which I hope to shoot a short film. This community seems like a great place to learn how to use the camera properly - I've already picked up heaps of advice and have applied for the offer on Barry's book.

I downloaded and installed the P2 viewer software and set up virtual p2 cards to play back from the p2 store but had a couple of problems and questions...

1) footage I shot with the camera's REC FORMAT set to 1080i/24PA is displayed as 1080/59.95i in the VIDEO CODEC in p2 viewer.

2) There is stuttering playback in the small screen or in full screen. How can I get it to play back properly? Dual Xeon, 3.06 Ghz. Seems like it ought to work.

3) Is there any way to copy footage off the p2 store onto my HD and set up the folder on the HD as a virtual p2 card? There's a thread that documents how to get Avid (my editing platform) to recognize a folder of my MXF files, but I can't seem to view them in p2 viewer.

Thanks a lot for all the help,
t

1) i dont know, sorry, ignorant pal-country here, has maybe to do with the pulldown, dont know!

2) I am not sure if there is ANY computer that is playing back WITHOUT stuttering, it happens to me even in dvcpro50, this has nothing to do with the computer, but the p2viewer!

If i play back the footage in edius, its smooth and without stuttering, even if i put color correction on it, its still in real-time!

3) dont know about avid(but as you mentione, you can find also something on the forum here if you search) for the virtual card: you just have to let the cards pop up as external drives: make a folder on your harddisk and copy and paste the cards-dont forget the "lastclip.txt" files!

Best is to name the folder on your hdd like "card1" and then put in the whole card: content-folder and lastclip-dont rename anything here!
Its all just data, so you can copy and paste like every content..!

1) is not a problem, all 1080 modes get recorded in the 59.94i codec. Your editing software (EDIUS Broadcast or FCP, or Raylight) will strip out the pulldown and restore the footage to 23.976P.

2) same as hvx_germanboy, although on my Pentium M 760 laptop I can play 720/24p full-screen without stuttering in the P2 Viewer, it's woefully underpowered for handling 1080/60i.

3) yes just create a folder on your hard drive and drag 'n' drop the CONTENTS and LASTCLIP.TXT files over. Then in P2 Viewer you use the "setting virtual drive" command to point to the folder that contains the CONTENTS folder and it'll show up as a virtual card.

I think you may also run into problems with decoding your video properly in your NLE if you change the UB (User Byte) meaning. The UB is used to help encode the frame rate information, and your NLE may use it to figure out if frames need to be dropped. Take a look at page 108 of the manual for more information.
