P2 User clip name- No go in Avid

Hi all

Simple Question here. I have updated my HVX's to the latest Firmware to support 16 giggers. ( I still dont have any yet but that is beside my my point here)

If I use P2 Viewer to change my "User Clip Name" on a virtual card, Avid 526 does not see it when I use the Media Tool and bring it in. It defaults back to whatever User clip name it had at the time of Aquisition. (and I do use the save button in P2 viewer prog for the record) This is a real Pain!!!. I dont always have time to setup a SD card and upload Metadata in the field. Am I the problem here or is this one of those "familiar problem with a new format,to be later addressed by the Manufacturers or NLE's manufacturers.

Maybe sometime, some saavy programmer will make a version of P2 Viewer that will work like a plug-in for Avid/Adobe and the others. It is a great program and the format is as robust as anything out there in features. But If I cannot use all that info/data in my NLE, what good is it. Its like having gold bars on sale for a nickle. If nobody knows I got em, what good am I.

As far as I know, the P2 viewer saves the data in the external XML file, and Avid takes it name from the internal MXF metadata.

That is kind of what I thought it did. Some lucky programmer out there could probably make a bunch of money making something to integrate all that XML data into some of the major editing platforms. I would do it myself if I had time to learn how to program in whatever language it uses.

I get so frustrated seeing a brilliant format serve such limited purpose.

Another great Idea for someone is an Auto name changer for MXF file structures. This way, all the adjacent Audio that goes along with the P2 Video files could be aptly named. I know that is more complicated than it sounds, but this is such a waste of good Data.

Oh well, I guess the format is still in it's infancy. The more people catch on, the better life is gonna get with P2. I love it so far, it is just so proprietary. Guess I need to do my part and get more folks involved with it so change comes about quicker for all of us.

Depending on how structured your shoots are you can load several files to the SD card and then just change them on the HVX. There's information about this in Barry Green's article on getting the most out of the User Clip Names. Look in the comments section. Good stuff.

But if you're not shooting from a script, or straying from the schedule a lot, then this will be less beneficial to you.
