I shot a bunch of stuff in 720pN last week and dubbed it to mini-DV for my client to edit. The results were great - nice, sharp images with good colour rendition. I'll use it again I'm sure...
I shot a narrative short on tape a few weeks back that included a couple of slo-mo shots. We recorded these to P2 and at the end of the shoot, layed them off to tape. The quality coming from the downconvert looked great. It was easy (once we figured out how to do it, always keep your manual handy!) and quick. The flexibility of the HVX is what sets it in a class of it's own in my book.
that's interesting, i had no idea that you could do that, run the P2 footage down to tape.....i guess after doing that the whole HD part is gone, but great for DVD
Could just be that I am spoiled in looking at the HVX-200's amazing 720 24PN pictures but to me, the DV downconvert, while it looks okay, seems a bit soft when compared with NTSC DV shot with the DVX-100A. I agree with Barry's recommendation that if you are shooting for an SD delivery with no need for HD in the future, shoot DVCPro50, it looks loads better than DV.
I have delivered a couple of projects with 720 24PN DV downconverts and it looks okay, but just okay, not crisp and well defined.
