P2 to laptop to . . .

Am still a bit confused about this. If I use the camera streaming directly to Firewire external HDD, do I still need the P2 card for this?

I know Barry will clarify this further but you "cannot"....I repeat....."cannot" stream live video directly to a stand-alone 1394 firewire drive. It is not possible unless you have a Firestore or Cineporter "smart" device.

The firewire hard drive can be used to dump the contents of a P2 card after you have recorded on it. To accomplish this you must switch the camera to "host" mode (therefore you must stop recording during this time). The camera has the "smarts" to perform a file transfer from P2 to 1394 hard drive. The camera does not have the "smarts" to do a file transfer to a USB2 drive.

Hope this clarifies this issue.

I think this thread should have appropriately been titled "P2 to . . .?
Thanks to Barry and everyone else for the great information here. Can't wait for the P2 technology to get started!

But, still, to avoid an interrupted workflow wouldn't you need some type of card reader connected to the EHD (through firewall, we've established) in order to keep shooting on a second P2 card?
Any suggestions or clarifications?

I am planning on backing up on DVD all footage, plus using Raid 1 for all footage as well.

Losing the footage is not an option for me as I am sure it isn't for most everybody.

Some people are going to use several hard drives, others DVDs. Just depends on what you want to use.

Since I bought a laptop specifically for the HVX-200, I am going to burn DVDs of all the footage (dvd burner was included). This includes making at least two copies of each 4 minutes of footage.

Baquajim, what brand of laptop did you buy specifically for the HVX200 and what are its specs? Also, to burn to DVD, is this just the raw data to be able to say burn this in movie form once Blu-ray is available. Just trying to understand the workflow and archiving. Thanks.
