P2 to computer headaches

I assume, based on the numerous posts, that people like and use the HVX200. I find it to be totally useless. No matter what I do I cannot get the video from the camera to my PC. I have downloaded the panasonic viewer, I have followed the directions in the manual and all suggestions online. I don't want to watch the video clips on the flip out view finder. I would like to move them to the computer so that they can be edited and used.

Ok lets go from the top and get this sorted.

So first, Windows or Mac?

Also in the meantime try this to get the files from your card to computer.

First whatever platform change the menu to ensure youre setup up for firewire or USB. To do that go to the OTHER FUNCTION menu and under PC mode select USB or 1394 DEVICE.

Once youve got that jump out of the menu and connect the camera via the correct cable.

Then locate the Mode button. Press it so the MCR lights up. Then "PRESS IT AGAIN FOR TWO SECONDS" (yes thats right you press once to go to MCR and release, then press and hold for two seconds). You should see on the screen "device connect". If so, your p2 card will now be mounted to your computer as media. Copy All contents to a folder on your computers hard drive (whichever you use for editing) and then your set.

IF YOU HAVE CHOSEN FIREWIRE - POWER DOWN THE CAMERA!!!
then connect the camera via the correct cable THEN power up the camera

long story short. if you plug a hot firewire cable into a hot camera. there is a reasonable possibility that you could fry the firewire port

My computer is Windows based. These are the same directions I have been following. Nothing shows up on my computer. I was able to pull up the pictures from my using Real Player. But all that was loaded was the picture that shows up in the thumbnail. It plays as a 2 second clip of a still image.

hate to ask. but are u sure your computer meets the minimum specs?

have you tried both firewire and usb modes?
have you tried it on another computer?

we had another guy come through here with a similar problem last week.
he bought his camera used and it appeared that he had a fried firewire port.

but if realplayer can see thumbnails (and i guess using realplayer was just a desperation move?), your problem doesnt sound like a port issue...

Double check disk management and see if the drives are loading without a letter. (type in computer managment to the start menu and run "computer management". On the left there is a disk management icon). P2 prefers drive letters E&F from my past use and sometime glitches of those are in use. Through disk management you can easily assign a new letter so it will show up in my computer.

64 bit dual core, HP Pavillion.
Tried both firewire and USB.
I tried Real Player because it was the only thing on the computer that recognized I was hooked to anything.

Are you using the P2 Viewer software?
I went to the Panasonic website and went through the steps. It appears to be on my computer. Do I need to enable the internal drive or disable it under drive settings? When I go to P2 store manager everything is grayed out and it doesn't allow me to click on anything.

do you have a P2 store? it wouldnt seem like you would. maybe that software is conflicting with the standard P2 driver

Any chance you can get on another computer and see if you can have the cards mount as drives in USB mode?

I don't remember having the option of loading as USB or Firewire when downloading the drivers. Yes, I can try it on another computer and use the 32 bit download. Is the Firewire primarily for use with a Mac? Do I need a disc from Panasonic to get the computer to recognize the camera itself or should it matter if the drivers recognize the P2 cards?

no. there is no usb/firewire options...
and no, firewire isnt mac only. but it is advisable to only use it for live capture, rather than transferring cards.

and no again, you dont historically need anything disc-wise from panasonic to get this to work.

we havent asked you yet. what version of windows are you running?

this really shouldnt be this difficult. something is wrong here. did you erase and reformat your machine at any point? i did that with an HP of mine once and it took me several days to get back to basic functionality - and to this day i never could locate drivers for certain features...

I'm running Windows Vista which I despise. I haven't reformatted however I did lose the ability to use the CD/DVD player/burner. I get a message that it has been disabled for some reason. Even though I'm not using the burner could that have something to do with my system?

I had a similar situation on Vista not so long ago after the HDD failed and was replaced. WTH did I do to fix that.... I will keep trying to remember.
