P2 to AVCHD

Why would you want to convert your P2 footage to AVCHD? DVCPROHD is a much better codec than AVCHD and DVCPROHD is alot easier on system resources.

Because if you convert DVCPro HD down to AVCHD and zip into a folder, you can pretty much take, for instance, lets say take a 4GB clip and drum it down to about 600mb-800mb. Converting at 24mbps it still has a very high image quality; high enough for broadcast purposes. Thus, it is now uploadable, at a much quicker rate, to send to clients via ftp.

Then on the back end, all the client has to do is use the free software out there to reconvert back to a standard P2 clip.

One thing I've noticed during testing is, if shooting in and interlaced format, the bit rate to convert to AVCHD needs to be up around 24mbps (21 for video and 3 for audio). You can get away with as low as 6mbps with 720p, but as long as there is not a lot of movement.

You're going to severely degrade your footage if your compress to AVCHD and then back to P2. Shooting in P2 means that you do have to invest in storage, and if you're not able to do that, then you shouldn't have gone with P2 in the first place. Compressing down to send to clients is fine, but you can use any format for that. Your original footage should remain in P2 because you're just going to hurt yourself down the road if you ever need it for anything again if you convert it to another format.

What he said. There is a reason networks approve DVCPROHD as a capture, intermediate, and delivery codec. By converting into AVCHD and back, you are loosing all the benefits of shooting P2 in the first place. What network are you shooting HD for that is requesting AVCHD over DVCPROHD?
