P2 timecode drift after ingest

Okay I looked all over, and I didn't see this in a faq. I have worked with almost the same setup on four diffferent shoots, and have had the same problem.

I am sure I am screwing the settings up but I keep checking them with the D.P. I match camera. So I don't understand how this is happening.

I ingest from the p2 card, or alternately a drive the p2 cards contents have been dumped too. After ingest I bring the appropriate camera reel back up in the import window and when I look at the timecodes, the FCP ones drift.

I've tried going back and re-importing in a session with a different timebase, but it doesn't seem to matter. From what I understand it soesn't matter anyway because the ingest process doesn't change timecode. Should I be importing at 29.97 and checking the remove frames?

P2 cards 8 and 4 gig, shot 720p, dumped to a FW drive via both mac and pc, imported into g5 powerbook and a g4 powerbook. FCP 5.0.1, and 5.1

First up, get both FCP's up to 5.1.2, the P2 Import window has been greatly upgraded.

Yes, you should be useing the option to remove the extra frames when you ingest.

Not sure what you mean by timecode drift. It's based on frames, how many frames does it show in a second? Can you specify what you mean by "drift"?

whaddya mean it drifts?

whaddya mean it drifts?

I mean the starting timecode for each take is identical, and the timecode out for any take longer than 30 seconds listed in the p2 ingest window doesn't match that of the Media end timecode in FCP.

It seems irrelevent what settings I use in FCP. FCP does not change a thing while importing p2 camera files. Which I think is great. So how come the starting timecode in both the FCP ingest window and file browser will both read 04:27:58:00, and the p2 ingest window will read a media end t.c of 4.28.04.20 but the media browser shows the media end as 04:28:04:17.

I have tried all the 720p setups for import, what am I over-looking.

I don't think frame removal is germain that is about importing from tape, and not p2 cards.

Frame removal works exactly the same on P2 files as it does on DVX100 tape. Only exception is when recording in "native" modes.

Ok, you can't set the fps to ingest. The P2 Import window is independent of anything else you have open, except your Broswer and Import Bin, if set. The project's Sequences settings have nothing to do with the P2 Import window.

What frame rate did you shoot at? 720p, right, but what frame rate did you set the camera for?

I didn't set the Camera up, I'm functioning as the "On Set Data Management Personnel." I have a very close relationship with the D.P. and I have consistently checked that if he's at 720p30 So am I, or whichever. I keep querying him about his settings, and he's telling me that our settings match.

It looks like everything is 720p60 @ 23.98 That's two different shows I'm looking at. According to the browser in FCP.

Ok, so it's using the 720p60 Compressor, with a video rate of 23.98fps. Yep, that's how 720p24 shows up with the pulldown removal.

My question is, what is the duration showing? Does that match? Can you actually see anything missing at the end of the clip?

I think you may be seeing the difference between the original 60p recording (that has the original 24 frames flagged) before pulldown removal, and the more native 24fps ingested file.

I'm about to import some 720p24 footage I shot over the weekend. I'll have to pay attention and see.

No, I'm saying I've never seen that problem, and I'm guessing at what it may be. I'm also saying I wouldn't worry about it unless you can actually see part of your shots missing.
