P2 Store - Purchasing vs. Rental interest, if any at all?

I wanted to get some feedback on what others think about this P2 store. Has anyone bought one? Planning on buying one? Why or why not? Etc....etc..

What about renting? Would you rent one for a week or month as needed? Or just use your laptop?

I am interested in buying one, but if there isn't much interest in others wanting to rent one, or buy one used, then I might reconsider.

Thoughts??

The P2 Store is pretty pricey . . . I think I'd wait for the FireStore or CinePorter . . . of course, then the P2 Store price may - hopefully - drop like a rock (or at least a pebble).

the virtue of waiting...

the virtue of waiting...

it's so damn hard to wait for these things to just be released, and another story to wait for prices to come down; even so, I'm going strictly rental on P2 cards until the cineporter or firestore is out for several months. also, I'll be renting out my hvx200 through a friend who owns a small production rental company here. when I'm not shooting with it why not make some extra cash?

it funny people think of the p2 store as very pricy when the cineporter and firestore will be as expensive. They are just different tools. I like the cineporter idea, but im alittle worried about them. I just hope I win the contest for the first unit ;)

I have a P2 Store on order. Ofcourse I wish it were 100gig+ for the same price... but I think it a matter of maximum of 15 partition, so even if it were 100gig, I would still be limited by 15 4gig P2 Card.

I dont like the Firestore, I mean yes it would do the job, but I like the posibility to delete scene that are useless directly from the camera. Ofcourse we might see a PCMCIA->Firewire for the firestore to act like a cineporter... who knows..

I've tried it. Your paying for the ruggedness and reliability of the verification. If your working in harsh locations where you woldn't tust a laptop then it's worth every penny.

It will not drop in price, although they may introduce a 100GB version, that would be smart. But I will buy one, maybe two depending on my shoots. I will also rent if necessay. Just depends on the number of cameras.

Dumb question, and probably addressed a thousand times:

Can the firestore EDIT- sorry, I mean P2 store :) dump the 60gb information to an external battery powered firewire or usb2 drive? For example, I have two 8gb P2 cards. I just finished filling my P2store. Can I put it to dump the footage EDIT AGAIN to the external hard drive while I still continue to shoot my 16 minutes of 720p60 or 1080i24? Can it copy the information fast enough to the firewire drive for me to get it empty after the 60gb are copied to the firewire drive? This would be the most mobile solution for long therm shooting with the HVX- the P2 store Belt mounted and a small backpack with the required firewire drives and additional gear. Non stop recording!

So, if you don't fill the whole P2 card with shots, does it still occupy the FULL capacity of that card on the P2 store? That is to say, if it dumps the whole card, then it must dump blank space (memory), as well. Which doesn't seem very efficient.

Cinealta, I made an edit to the post to make it more comprehensible- Maybe you didn't get what I meant. (my poor english is back with a vengeance)

Sorry SPZ, I was actually asking a different question than yours. I'm not sure of the answer to your question.

So if the P2 store does have a 15 partition limit, then there is no real point in taking it appart to see if you can self-upgrade the hard drive...

Perhaps that's the whole point:) I don't believe any sane engineer would design a system with such a stupid size limitation. A future unit with 120gb will probably cost a lot more than the price difference of the HDD. Companies with similar devices are charging $400 more for a disk that costs $40 more, even when the disk is user upgradable (not officially of course). Panasonic would make sure a different firmware or an official service center will be needed. And the disk will probably be presented as hand picked and tested for maximum performance and durability:)

That is a damn good question. I think if the card is formatted, then you fill it up half way, it just transfers whatever is on the card, which is the "half way footage". Then it reformats it to do it all over again.

Am I right here?

I dont think it dump blank space. It only dump the actual files on the P2 card.

But like we said before, there is a 15 partition limit. So you can store MAX 15 P2 4gig card. But a HD upgrade could put on a 120gig HD 15 8gig P2 Card.
