P2 Store offload note

Went up this last weekend to a GP motorcycle racetrack to film a coworker racing, and I decided to rent out the 60GB P2 Store and see how it fared. Overall, the workflow was pretty painless, offloaded P2 in the field no problem, and all the data seems to be there back in the studio. However, I did notice something worth mentioning.

I set up my P2 Store at basecamp and would typically venture out to the track with just a P2 card or two and sticks or glidecam whichever I was going to use. Occasionally I would only shoot a couple minutes on a P2 card and find myself back at basecamp, what the hell I might as well offload and have a fresh card. Well, halfway thru the second day my P2 Store was full, and I knew I didn't shoot that much footage. Thankfully the two P2 cards held out until the end, but I was wondering if I had accidentally duplicated a bunch of reads or something.

When I offloaded them into FCP, I noticed the P2 Store is partitioned into 15 ~4GB partitions. Some were full to 4GB, but others would only have a couple clips on them. I'm guessing that the P2 Store can not dynamically copy clips from multiple cards into the same partition. Maybe something to do with the LASTCLIP file structure or the way it has to track the clips internally. Has anyone tested and confirmed this aspect to P2 offloading?

Hi David:

You are correct, the way that the P2 Store partitions and deals with cards is somewhat limiting. Always fill your cards when using the P2 Store.

Best,

Dan
