P2 software

I notice that it is "recommended" to have 512MG of memory on your pc to use the software. My Dell has 256, is this fatal or will it just slow things down?

I appreciate any help as well as any other tips with the software. Thanks.

Well that depends. If you're just using the P2 Viewer to re-format the P2 card after an offload, then you should be fine. If you plan on playing the clips, however, then enjoy your 3fps... Plus I'm betting your CPU isn't high end if your system only shipped with 256mb, so you will likely have problems in that department as well.

Thanks Cam, The processor isn't that bad, its a 2.4G/400fsb/512 cache, (This is one of those dell laptops with a desktop processor and huge fan to disperse the heat.) I would like to play the clips. I can upgrade an additional 512 for a total of 768. Do you think then I can wath clips at 24fps?

I can't really answer that question but my Toshiba is a 3gHz Pentium 4 and seems to do alright with a gig of memory.

Either way you would do well to upgrade your memory. Can you, btw, toss the 256 chip and buy two 512's? That would really be the way to go . . . try http://www.memorygiant.com they're pretty reasonable.

Yes, I guess I can install a max of 1G of memory. Thanks for the suggestion. I tell you, this process has a lot of little extra expenses to get up and running beyond the camera. I know it will be worth it though.

How To Improve P2 Viewer Performance

How To Improve P2 Viewer Performance

(1) P2 Viewer version 3.0.1.4, offering slightly increased performance, is now available: (https://sec.panasonic.biz/sav/sec-cgi-bin/p2viewer/dlp2v.cgi?mylang=EN).

IMPORTANT: Udate P2 viewer, select Tools/Customize/HD Playback, then check both boxes ("Half Frame Rate" & "Half Resolution at Full Screen". This will improve your HD playback experience significantly !!!

(2) Many P2 data management softwares are on the horizon. The P2 card directory structure is a crude attempt at implementing a data model that integrates several aspects of video, audio, and an array of associated attributes and factors. With discipline, the management of P2 clip metadata, together with external attributes, will expand video into the realm of a "multimedia information system", analogous in power and use to ... say ... a Geographic Information System" such as ESRI's Arc/INFO "Coverage" or "Geodatabase" data models. The concept of a "data model" is rather abstract and requires a wide range of technical knowledge, and some imagination, to fully grasp and utilize. Even though Panasonic metadata, by itself, is very limited in scope, and essentially dead-ended, the P2 metadata can be joined through a metafield item to a relational database, thereby opening an entirely new world of sophisticated multimedia data management, advanced information system uses, and scientific and analytical uses. Too bad Panasonic didn't just use MySQL with custom datatypes to store all the data to begin with. Then there would be no limits !!!
