P2 Recording Dark

Whenever I record with my P2 card and bring the footage into FCP, the footage is very dark. I know this is not the way I shot the footage, as it is properly exposed etc on my viewfinder. My monitor is also calibrated correctly. Does anyone know why this is happening, or what I am doing wrong? Thanks!

You mean, the viewfinder on the camera? Not a reliable indicator.

What kind of "monitor" is calibrated correctly, and how? Your computer LCD monitor? Not a good indicator.

The Mac standard gamma for computer display also makes things darker than, say, on a PC or TV.

You need decent monitoring both when shooting, and for post... it doesn't sound like you're judging any of this using good tools...

Good luck!

try to re-calibrate your cameras viewfinder and LCD screen using the build in color bars. Also use a light meter if you have one to check for correct iris and all that. If you don't have a light meter use the cameras auto iris to get the appropriate exposure setting. After doing that you know that the image exposure should be fine.

Then re-calibrate your monitor. By the way are you using a production monitor? Or are you using a laptop or other computer monitor? If you are using computer screens then the image will not look like the final product. I notice that the images on my laptop look much darker than the are when looked at with a production monitor or played on a tv.

If the problem seems to continue then try to figure out if the camera, computer, or monitor is the issue. Use a different camera, use a different computer and use a different monitor and that should tell you what isn't functioning properly. Hopefully everything is fine and you can figure it out with what I mentioned above.

Good Luck!

Shoot a gray scale with black and a white patches.

Expose the white patch with 100% zebras.

Check on the waveform monitor of FCP where all is sitting.
