P2 "R-Series"

My friend just got his HVX-200, and it came with a 16 GB P2 Card. It says "R-Series" on it, and my old 8GB doesn't. What does this mean?

Also, when I delete clips, it takes almost a second per clip to delete. His takes about a quarter of the time. Is that because of the R-series thing? Or is it because his is new? Or is it the firmware update?

Thanks,
Ben Tubb

Hello Ben,

R-Series is simply the manufacturing method that Panasonic switched to with the newer cards. The older cards have actual SD cards placed on the circuit card with sockets. The R-Series is a bit more robust because they got rid of the SD cards and placed the actual memory chips on the circuit board.

An SD card on a circuit card with sockets... sounds like something a smart company would figure out how to upgrade. Then make a killing on selling it to HVXusers that have obsolete 4GB cards that need an upgrade. Interested anyone?

From what I understand, that won't work because there is a microprocessor that is hardwired for that specific storage amount. So even if you change out the SD cards, you will still be stuck with the same amount of storage.

P2-R Series Incompatibility

P2-R Series Incompatibility

I own an AG-HVX 200P, I recently tried to dump some footage for a friend from an "R-Series" P2 Card. The camera would not recognize it prompting me that it was an "Incompatible Card". WhaD up with it?

First was H, then R, now A. A is the current 'standard' P2 card version. For all intents and purposes, they are the same thing. The prices dropped with each new release. If you buy a new 'standard' card today it will be an A, if you buy a used card it could be any of the three.

'E' Series cards are different. They use a different kind of flash memory. It is cheaper and so the E cards are less than 1/2 the price of the A cards. However, it is also limited on how many times it can be rewritten. If you used it every day it should last for 5 years, most cards do not receive this kind of use, and should last you much longer.

H & R appear to be basically the same, but A does have the advantage of being faster than the older cards were. The older ones were 640mbps maximum transfer rate, the A series are 800mbps.

I have an 16 GB R series and want to upgrade to 64 GB. B&H sells the 64 GB E series.... is this the latest greatest card?

Will both cards work.... after software upgrades? I purchased my HVX200 before the E series cards came out.
