P2 partition question- clarification from Barry's book

Am I reading this correctly in Barry's HVX Book... It is talking about off loading your P2 cards to your PC...

"...will create 15 different partions, which will represent 15 different drive letters. Note this is the maximum number of partitions the HVX allows: so if you are using 4 GB cards, using a drive larger than 60 GB will not allow you access to the larger storage space. If you are using 8 GB cards, you can use up to 120 GB of hd space (15 partitions of 8 GB each)."

This seems EXTREMELY limiting if I can only store 120 minutes of HD footage on a drive- and even if I have another drive I would run out of drive letter very soon.

Please tell me I am reading this wrong.

It refers to using the HVX in "1394 Host" mode with a firewire attached drive. The HVX creates a new partition on the slave drive each time it copies a card, up to a maximum of 15. If you have 4GB cards, it can address only 60GB of disk drive. With 8GB cards it can address only 120GB. So this is not directly connecting the HVX to your PC.

Right -- it's about direct offloads from the camera to a drive, with no computer involved.

If you're offloading to a computer you can use the full capacity of any drives you have connected to that computer. Which is one of many reasons why I think offloading to a laptop is far superior to trying to use 1394 Host Mode on the HVX.

thanks for the clarification. So, if I offload to a laptop it doesn't ceate partitions of any sort then, correct?

I say a new product that is coming out called the USB Hitch (or something like that) that allows you to dump from one USB 2.0 device to another . Could I use that in conjunction with say a couple 60 GB Ipods to offload my P2 cards to?

Thanks for the help.

The USB Hitch copies between USB mass storage devices, and I don't think the HVX is recognized as such without the installation of the P2 drivers. Since you can't install drivers on the USB Hitch, I would not expect it to be able to offload from the camera.

Correct.

Actually it is. When in USB Device mode the HVX is a Mass Storage Class compliant device. I am sure the USB Hitch would work just fine. Haven't tried it, obviously, but since USB-On-The-Go drives work, I can't fathom why the USB Hitch wouldn't work.

If this USB Hitch really is USB 2.0, that would be an excellent development. I've tried for a while, and have been unable to find a USB Bridge that actually transfers at USB 2.0 speed. Of course, we should make the distinction between USB 2.0 Full Speed and High Speed... *sigh*...
