P2 on site workflow

We are shooting with our new HPX500 and wanting to offload clips onto drives for backup. Just wondering if anyone has used 2.5" bus powered external drives like the Maxtor Onetouch III Mini? We are going to be out in the wilderness for the day... only battery power around, and want to back up to our laptop and to the drives. Is this a safe way to go? Thinking of backing up on 2 Maxtors in the field... ? Just haven't had much experience with the USB powered drives.
 
If you are using a PC, then the USB bus powered drives should be fine. Just get two and make sure that they power up. Some USB buses do not supply enough voltage to get them going.

Only use Firewire bus powered drives on Macs. The USB drives I have tried on several Powerbooks and MacBook Pros just don't get enough power from the USB bus.

Oh, and remember, they are slower so expect longer transfer times. Again, something easy to test before you get out in the sticks.
