P2 Offload to Mac - Format Conversion?

I am doing some pre-purchase intelligence and while another post on this site was very helpful about how to offload to a Mac, I don't know what format this offloads in and how I can convert it to both an mpg4 and .mov. I do speaker recording for education and we ultimately make conversions to be seen on a desktop and mobile devices like iPhone.

My understanding is that it offloads as a proprietary format but will a conversion program recognize the format?

Hi Deborah, welcome.

P2 records in a MXF format in a unique file structure. This format can be imported to Final Cut (FCP) via Log & Transfer, which converts the raw video to MOV. P2 can also be imported directly into Premiere Pro.

Once your footage is captured in an editor, you can export the sequence to any format you wish (that the editor is capable of). For example, FCP can export an iPod version.

I'm not that savvy, so I'm not aware of any apps that will directly convert the MXF files. You will need some type of compatible video editor, such as those mentioned.

Hi Deborah,

As Dick mentioned you need some sort of editing package to convert to the format you want. If you are part of an education department, you could chase someone in a video department, or buy an education version of FCP or Avid Media Composer type software which will convert an MXF file to either of the formats you mention. I know Avid have a great education price for Media Composer software. It is possible that you may find a software conversion program using Google that will do the job for you.
