P2 Metadata?

So, after searching evererywhere, it looks like we PC users are out of luck when it comes to making use of the metadata embedded in the P2 MXF files.

If I'm not mistaken, the only two programs which can actually read and write the metadata are Edius and the P2 viewer. Unfortunately, neither are useful in the Avid-based workflow I'm using.

So am I missing something? Are there other PC prgrams out there that can allow me to read, write and export the P2 metadata? Or am I stuck renaming everything manually in Avid?

Any suggestiongs would be appreciated.

Thanks, tdx

At this point, no, Avid doesn't let you manipulate the meta data.

But that doesn't mean "PC users" are out of luck. There is, as you point out, Edius and the P2 Viewer.

Yes, it's more accurate to say that Avid users are out of luck. Maxtrox Axio also supports MXF metadata, so Premiere users have access to it as well.

Yeah, I sorta figured Avid users were out of luck. Now another question on this subject: since i have to work with avid and it doesn't read the metadata, does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can extract the metadata from the P2 files and use them? Maybe a database program?

The reason I need to have access to the metadata is because we're shooting a tv series and our AC wrties down which shot belongs to which episode using the P2 viewer. So I need a way to access that information, ideally without having to open each shot individually in the P2 viewer to find out which episode it belongs to. Something a little more streamlined and practical. An ideas?

OK, let me detail how I organize my database.
This is from my experience from a Feature that I am finishing up:
I shot for a whole month (July), on a really fast pace. At night I would dump everything to my PC and make copies to an external harddrive.
In the Avid Media Files / MXF folder, everything is arranged by folders, so July 1 (is folder #1, and so on...)
On a TXT file inside the MXF folder is where my database is.
It is really simple:
6/1/2006- Shooting exteriors, John's House, Landscape (Folder 1)
6/3/2006- Scene 22 inside car (Filo/Matias) (Folder 2)
6/4/2006- Scene 80 outside fort duncan + House ext. (Folder 3)
and so on....

NOW IN AVID:
I have only ONE bin where ALL of the footage is stored, but everything is arranged BY DATE (and NOT by the names of the files).
If I'm looking for my stuff from scene 22 I reference my TXT file and see that the stuff was shot on 6/3/2006, so I would just go to my footage shot on that date and start chopping...

It's a really primitive way for such a cutting edge technology, but it works really well for me...

Hope this helps!
