HPX250: P2 metadata don't get into FCP 10.1.3 or Prem CC - just User Clip Name only

I'm curious to know if anyone has success of getting the P2's metadata such as SHOT MARKER and text memo to ingest properly into FCP X or Premiere CC? So far no luck. I was hoping an actual marker that corresponds to the one marked on the field during the actual shoot. However, only the User Clip Name gets in. But all else nothing. Kind of wasteful if I spend all the time trying to input markers and shot memo in the field and the P2 Viewer Plus.

I will have to check. I believe you have the choice of choosing what metadata fields you see on import. I do not use P2 viewer anymore. I just go right into FCP and import. I try to tag my clips as they are coming in. One neat trick I have also learned is using finder level tags. If you mark the files in the finder with tags, you can import the finder tags as key word collections. I will check on the P2 card import as you described. It should not be a problem that I can recall, but I could also be wrong.

Looks like only SHOT MARKER will get in as "Good" checkmark in FCP 10.1.3. Text Memo and many others are ignored. But I do see cam model, s/n, codecs get imported.

They have just released an update to FCP X, version 10.1.4 that works natively with the MXF files. This should fix the issues with metadata import. See this link http://provideocoalition.com/mspencer/video/mxf-support-in-final-cut-pro-10.1.4

Just spent few hours in 10.1.4 and the native MXF support is geared toward all makers and not specifically at P2 cams. This means there's no TEXT MEMO. I use this from time to time with the WLAN & PROXY options on PX5000 & HPX3100 cams. They're very useful. Panasonic told me only Avid support full TEXT MEMO. Now w/ FCP 10.1.4, I can rely on the good check marker. The only viable solution is to custom name your shot in real time (w/ the WLAN & PROXY option only) or ahead of time w/ the metadata upload. I produce 5-8 cams shows regularly. Metadata is quite important but FCP 10.1.4 haven't fully support P2's full metadata yet. Maybe I'm missing something hidden but so far after carefully checking at view option in 10.1.4, there are 10 new "MXF.... properties pertaining to cam name. But those are essentially the same thing as FCP's previous metadata. So I can say it's not at all useful and still has no TEXT MEMO.

The downsize with native MXF import vs rewrapped to MOV in FCP 7.0.3 is the large library file. I noticed ever since 10.1.3, a typical 2 Gb raw P2 media on the rewrapped to MOV takes up only about 120 Mb for the library file. And when I import native P2, it jumps to a whopping 560 Gb library file size. This is not at all small increase. 500 Gb increase is quite unacceptable. 10.1.4 is exhibiting the same behavior. There's a cost here: Do a head of time in 7.0.3 to save hdd space or let 10.1.4 do it for you at the expense of large library file. For big docu project, I will still use the good old FCP 7.0.3 to rewrap to MOV (with full meta data of course) and import it in to 10.1.4. This saves about 400-900 Gb per library but at the cost of having to spend many hours waiting for FCP 7.0.3 to rewrap the original P2 media.

Have you used Raylight? I've installed some mac/Fcp systems and installed Raylight. Point to a P2 folder and in about a few sec., the P2 imports easily. I don't know how it works on X. But 7 worked great with Raylight.

Haven't upgraded Raylight since 2009. And these days legacy FCP is mostly used to Log & Import. So Raylight is not as useful as back in FCP 7 era. Mentioned earlier this helps to reduce the FCP 10's library size at the expense of added time. But the rewrapped native Apple AVC-I 100 movs are already prepped and FCP 10.1.4 likes it better than native P2. For short form projects, will use native P2. But long form docs, Log & XFer is more suitable for me.
