P2 Media Cards vs FIRESTORE 3 hour Value price test.

Oh...

for that kind of work, i would say that concentrating on a few good takes is a clear advantage over the "let's make 20 takes and then find the good one later..." way of thinking.

Plus with film you had to be more careful as you couldn't shoot as much without wasting money. So possibly more effort went into getting everything right within a few takes.

While we are just having fun, why not run the numbers on the Venom, the solid state recording mechanism for the Viper HD Camera. You get 10 Minutes of record time in Filmstream 4:4:4 or 18 Minutes in 4:2:2 HD. For the "Best of NAB 2005" introductory price of $55,000!

The Grass Valley press release reads:

"On a typical movie shoot there might be two or three Venom FlashPak systems in use: one in the camera, one ready to replace it, and one writing to the transport medium to be delivered to the post house."

Sound familiar? Don't blame Panasonic for adopting a workflow that is emerging as the professional standard for single camera dramatic and commercial production. It isn't for everyone, since when is that a surprise? What we are seeing is the progression of film workflow into the digital age. P2 fits nicely as the indroductory format into this workflow. I see it as an evolution of the film camera and its accociated workflow. I've never complained about the cost of magazines for my Aaton. I've not heard a single complaint about the price of the Venom because to those that need it, its worth every penny. IMHO the same goes for P2. It's too much for some (I'm sorry) but still a hell of a lot cheaper than anything else with the same capability, and it will only get cheaper. Until then, buy the camera, rent the cards.

My .02 (which wouldn't buy me a frame of storage on the Venom! :)

It's very simple, P2 media prices will drop very quickly if the HVX sales will be good and more cameras that use them will come out
right now I don't think anyone else makes them, but as soon as the camera comes out you will some more manufacturers getting into the market

I remember when digital stills cameras came out the memory was so expensive, now that everyone is buying them the memory prices dropped

the same will happen with P2, the prices will drop and the memory sizes will be much bigger
and if the demand is high, the prices will come down very fast

still, in a controlled environment I would prefer to capture directly to hard drive, why use P2 and offload it to a storage when I can just have a wire connected to that same storage all the time
if I'm out in the field it another story

Well, I plan to use DVCPRO25 on 24p for awhile as the majority of my shooting. I can't nearly afford the additional cost for the cards. If I really want to shoot DVCPROHD, I'll record through my laptop to an external drive system I've set up (2x 250gb HDD's = $264 vs. $800 or so for one 4gb P2 card [4 minutes if I'm not mistaken]). But don't get me wrong, when the price plummets for the P2 cards, I'll be first in line.

Solid state in whatever form is the way to go. P2 is going to increase in size but I have to agree on reload breaks that standard film presents. It gives you some breathing space and God knows we all need that. This idea of continuous filming does degrade what you get, wears down the talent, and just takes the sharpness out of everyone in the production!

Hi,
Why does it say pappasarts is banned? I hope it is not because of this thread. Because, though he started to get my blood boiling, disagreeing with Barry Green should not equal expulsion. Weird.

I don't get all the fuss about P2 cards, if you cannot affort them when they come out, rent them, probably cheaper than renting a digibeta camera. Right?

And it does not bother me that Pana and Jan are trying to convince that this is a great workflow because, hell, it is for me. It is almost ideal but for the cost, which will come down.
Solid state drives are the future, I cannot wait for the day when I can archive and shoot to my heart's content.
