I don't want to come off as a panasonic hater but can someone explain why a device that is essentially 4 SD cards in a raid costs as much as the 8 GB P2 cards do? Here's my math: Current rough street price for 2 GB SD card $60 X 4 = $240 for 8GB. Currently an 8 GB P2 card is $1400. Please explain.

For the same reason a $50 ink cartridge costs $4.00 to make
America, gotta love it, it is because they can.

Blue-Ray recorder $1000.

Anyone, anyone?

I remember paying over a grand for my first (single speed) DVD recorder.
I think the software that enabled me to use it was another $400-500.
(and that wasn't proprietary technology--others had licensed it).

Yeah, my thoughts too. It is really absurd to justify these prices and that is also the main reason I did not get an HVX (that and the missing 720 25/50p support in Avid).

I think the problem is, that there is no competitor on the market and so long as Panasonic don´t allow other companies to build P2 Cards, the situation will only change, if they decide that it should change. I would call it simply monopoly.

Any ideas, when Sandisk, LG or Kingston will be allowed to produce the cards ?

I agree that P2s are too expensive and someone aside from panasonic needs to start making them so the price will go down. However, arguing that they're only worth 4 SD cards is kind of silly. As Barry pointed out on the other thread, they have a lot more hardware in them than just the SD cards. The main thing though is the speed. Do you think a cheap SD card could ever capture DVPro50 high definition footage in realtime? Of course not. These things are expensive because they are so fast.

We've discussed this a hundred times. I've answered it at least fifty times. The P2 cards are NOT just 4 sd cards in a raid, there's a microprocessor/controller chip in there that has to be able to respond to commands from the camera, and all sorts of other goodness.

You can no more compare raw SD cards to a P2 card than you can compare a McDonald's cheeseburger to a Wolfgang Puck dinner.

If there really was a big markup being made, other companies would compete for that business.

But this has been discussed and disproved a hundred times already, no need to go kicking this same dead horse over and over.
