P2 + MacBook Pro A NO GO

Just got off the phone with an Apple rep, it has been confirmed that the new slot (Express Card/34) will not work with a PCMCIA card unless a 3rd party Manufacturer like Panny comes up with a solution. And with all the Hoo-Ha around HVX delivery hold-ups, I don't think Panny has the time to deal with trying to make an adaptor.

So, Buy your PB G4's before they're gone or hold out for an adaptor.

As a consolation, I think that if you're using cineporter, that will still work with the Macbook, via USB or Firewire.

doccutter,

I suppose you're right, but I think keeping cost down is a priority. With the cineporter slated to cost somewhere above 2500 USD and a full production HVX package 16-25K an a LTO backup solution 1.3-2K, one has to wonder if going up a level in camera technology would be better.

Oh well that's what you get for investing in bleeding edge technologies.

I'm still planning on coming up with a workflow where I can capture straight to the MacBook Pro. But the lack of P2 compatibility is disheartening. Maybe this is something another 3rd party developer like the folks behind the Cineporter would like to tackle.

Maybe we should look at the BLUE CAMERA??

Ha ha ha...ohh the joy

Seems like a tough thing to do with a computer strapped to or tethered to the camera. What's needed is a microcomputer or sorts that can run FCP but is small enough to be worn on the body or even mounted to the HVX via a noga arm

I do very little to no live event recording. I usually have my current powerbook sitting on a stool next to me while shooting so i can refer back to my notes, script, and storyboards. So capturing straight to a laptop is not that much of a stretch. Its already been offered up as a viable option by many other members of the board. Granted it definately will not work for eveyone but my needs are different from theirs.

Although I wouldn't think twice about purchasing a device like you're supposing.

I think the direct to powerbook is a good solution it's just with (at least with the projects I've been working on as of late) all the camera moves and the lack of time shoot to overly ambitious schedules, a direct to powerbook frightens me.

Really, Panavision's Genesis has its recorder mounted on top of the camera I don't see why we cant have a small computer mounted on the HVX for direct to NLE recording

I love how they made it look like a film magazine. I'm surprised they didn't make it rounder just for style.

Its about making the old boys feel comfortable about shooting video and not film. (work-flow issues)

Duel Systems is developing an adapter that should work with the new Powerbooks

"Duel is actively developing three new adapter devices:

An adapter to connect a CompactFlash Card to the new ExpressCard interface.
An adapter to connect a current PCMCIA card to the new ExpressCard interface.
An adaptor to connect the new ExpressCard interface to a standard USB type “dongle” plug."

more like making sure the camera can use all panny's standard film camera acc.

How will an adaptor physically fit a 54mm wide PCMCIA card into a 34mm wide ExpressCard slot?

Trailing wires, anyone?

Maybe so... but its really the film production work flow. It's like replaceing mags. when one is full just un-hook and replace with a another one.

I think the answer to that is fairly obvious: it will protrude externally from the case, like any number of PCMCIA devices already do. No big deal. I don't see why everyone's freaking out when it's evident that quite a few companies will have adapters on the market almost immediately. I mean, people DO use PCMCIA for other reasons than P2 cards. Hardware manufacturers are going to protect their users. Calm down.
