P2 in avid

Transferred the mxf files from my p2 card into the avid mediafiles directory, and got them into avid. Was able to cut and edit all the clips. Audio worked fine. When i went to export, i sent it to quicktime reference and it played back without the video. Audio was there, but it was black screen. Anyone know if i need to change any settings, or need anything else. I just got my hvx200 and i'm trying to figure out my workflow. I'm using Avid 5.1.5. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I use the same setup (actually spx800) copy all video and audios into the MediaFiles Folder and they show up at Media Tool and drag ok to the bin, I use QT Ref as well. Try making sure all the QT settings are right.

You may have to contact Avid and see exactly what version of quicktime you need to have installed to get the reference file to work with the P2 and 5.1.5 I couldn't get the reference file to work, so I was exporting hd wmv files for a while, and then taking those into sorenson. I upgraded Avid, and slightly downgraded quicktime, and it started to work again.

Is there a way to back up files that have already been cut and pasted into the media files directory?

Yea, I contacted avid, and I must say, they have one of the worst support phone systems. When I finally did get someone, he was rude and gave me the look it up myself solution. Thanks. He said to get the quicktime version from the readme for the version I have. But I've only had the problem with the hd footage. On all of my regular omfi projects, the qt reference plays fine. Probably a real easy solution. Thanks for the advice though. I'll do my own research on it and match it up like you did.

The Quicktime ref for DVCPRO HD does not work in Avid. It never has. In order for it to work, you have to use the AVID DV codec. Just check the AVID DV codec checkbox in he export settings.

Yeah sanchez makes a good point there, make sure you check the "use Avid codec" box.

Yep Avid has had horrible support, (its actually getting alot better now, and they actually have an "avid customer support #" on their page now too. You have to be mean and demanding, and dont let them off the phone until you get the answers you want.

I have the same problem. I am concerned that the DV codec sacrifices color space, etc. when burning DVDs or going into after effects...

anybody know if this a valid concern? I know in theory that a qt ref points back to original media...but bringing in "DV" to my lovingly shot DVCPROHD footage makes me all weird inside :-P

When it says "Use Avid DV Codec", it's referring to the fact that Avid categorizes its DV, DVCPRO50, and DVCPROHD codecs under a main heading of "DV". Technically, this is correct, though semantically, it's a bit of a head scratcher. All this means is, "When exporting, use Avid's DV/DV50/DVCPROHD codec, and not another manufacturer's DV/DV50/DVCPROHD codec that may be installed on your system." If you've captured or imported media into an Avid NLE, you're already using their DV codec, so it's safe to keep that box checked (actually, it's preferable) when exporting to a QT reference or a standalone QT.

ahhh. that makes sense. (Kinda...) Another strange thing is that on the "bad" white screen qt ref files, the movie inspector claims it is a DVCPRO (not HD) *PAL* quicktime.
My project is ntsc...

what the--??
