P2 Gear

Have any one used P2 gear in standalone config with 2x 32Gb cards & mac OS x formatted external Hard drive connected for offloading p2 cards on to it.

Whats the kind of speed one would expect for a full 32GB card transfer. I am planning to buy 6 P2 cards along with P2 gear & HPX502. I shoot events which require long recording time & mostly are non stop in nature for times like 3hours or so. in such a scene i would like to have a PC-less copying setup which is like p2 gear but which would transfer a ful 32GB card in about 10-15minutes (at least i wish so).

Any views shall help me !!!
thx

First of all, you can't offload to a mac-formatted external drive. The P2 Gear will format the drive itself, to FAT32 format.

Second, you should get about 2 gigabytes per minute, or around 16 minutes to offload a 32GB card.

pardon my ignorance. Good that P2gear will do the formatting. is FAT32 formate used so that it gets recogn by Mac & Windows systems parallely. I have used FS3 firestore with my SDcams there also FAT32 was used. Is ther any particular reason for using this format.

Also one panny reseller was telling me that P2 uses Linux syste,s so its not prone to virus as windows based files are... any takes.

also has one ever used a lacie type raid configured HDD (2Tb or 4Tb types) for use with P2 gear ... if it can be used I am very thrilled to have a immence space for p2 copying on field.... i dont know if tis possible though.

You need to stay clean, i had a Hdd corrupted in the editing studio and P2csm freezed! To understand and accordingly act ,cost some panic on the field!

still not clear

1. Is p2 Virus free
2. can one use 1TB or more type RAID external drives from Lacie for P2 gear in standalone copy mode from p2 cards to HDD

If you just stop looking at all those virus free porn and warez sites....

In all seriousness though, where is it that you think you would get a virus from? Virus free if it's on a mac, but anything on a windows system can always be comprimised by a virus. Typically, other than my laptop, I have a dedicated computer for video editing that is not connected to the internet. Multiple boxes set up on a KVM switch. If you have to get something from the internet, download it to your other computer, scan the file, throw it on a memory card / key and transfer it over. It's really the only "sure" way you're not going to have a virus on any windows computer - don't subject it to attacks.

Never had a problem though on my laptop, but again, I don't visit the types of sites that are typically prone to getting a virus. Plus I keep my Mcafee up to date....adaware.. about all you can do.

Linux won't get a virus either, but you are WAY too worried about this. Linux is an operating system. P2 cards are a hard drive, I believe formatted FAT32, hence the 4GB per file, but they may incorporate something in Linux to recognize the card. I dunno. But, unless there is a specific reason you are worried about this so much that you are not telling us, you should be fine.

nothing more than virus attact since i will shoot on the so called P2 drive & i dont have a tape safety so i m more than worried.

<porn site were good to me when i teen no it means just no **** at all > :))

One silly question since i dont own p2 yet. When we transfer each P2 card onto HDD thru P2gear does it get unique folder name unlike Capture ... from the card automatically !

PC, Macs, Linux... none are completely safe from viruses. PCs are CURRENTLY the most vulnerable only because most viruses are targeted at them. But Macs have indeed suffered malware attacks; and some of the most damaging attacks on record have been against UNIX systems.

That said... P2? Viruses? If you mean corruption in general... any media is subject to corruption. Many of us (especially after widespread problems with P2 carda and Macs) always make sure to write-protect P2 cards before sticking them in any computer.

Potentially, someone could write a virus targeting the software that drives a P2 camera. Since they're firmware-upgradeable, it would certainly be easy for someone to screw up the cameras by distributing modified firmware. But you'd have to be somehow tricked into installing it.

Otherwise, since we don't tend to install software frequently on our cameras, it shouldn't be a worry.

oooo thats scary Shame ON You read ful form of SONY may do so to save their xdcam format...

i had recently called both Soon Only Not Yet (again read SONY) & PANASONIC for a combined demo for me to evaluate HPX502 HDX900 xdcam355 & 700 but at the last moment they backed off cox they as told to me by insiders that the engineers k new the xdcam format & their camera performances is far cheap when compared to Pany cams. the SHAME ON YOU company made betamax which later betacam a good format then to Digi Beta->BetaSX->IMX->HDCAM->HDCAM SR on the other front DV->DVCAM->XDCAM->xdcam HD & now after panny's success of P2 cards they have aped the EX SxS series. Why does sony do it like fooling temselves & later making fool out of users by giving them confusing choices.

Panny is good They had DV-DVCPRO-DVCPRO50-DVCPROHD with tape & P2 format not 10,000 media & recording formats. I believe thats one of the reasons for correct pricings & product Panasonic has become world leader in Broadcasting industry. I am not starting a hate rally for Shame ON You prodycts cox i grew up with tube cameras M3 + umatic low band high band betacam M3000 M7 DXC537 D30 D35 & now D50 - DSR400 but I have given up on sony cox of their funny & mindless product line & pricing. I have also used panny DV200 the DV model 1/2 inch model it washed out the result of Sony DSR 2/3" 400 ...

I am soon going to own a HPX500 with about 32/64 GBP2 cards.

BTW I found that i recorded about 20minutes of a 16GB P2 card is it variable or by chance i got such a duration !!!

Panasonic> Soon Only Not Yet - Shame ON You (SONY) :) fun intended !

I just came across a Sony Sxs card reader usb Connected to any Comp. Now can we use this to connect to laptop then we use a adopter to connect the P2 PCIMCIA card to this PCIMCIA express adopter. it shall serve as a cheap P2 card reader for Laptop & HDD field dumping... !
