P2 footage problem

Have just finished a shoot using HVX-200 onto P2 cards and noticed that the footage that exceeds 4GB's will not open in Quicktime or FCP. Although the footage in question shows a Quicktime icon when I try to open it, it says 'the file is not a movie' and in FCP says 'file error'
Is there anyway I can get this footage to open? This is some crucial footage and there must be something there as the file takes up 4GB of space on the hard drive.
Please help
Thanks in advance

No footage on a P2 card can exceed 4GB.

Put the cards back in the camera -- if they play in the camera, then you know you have no problems with your footage.

I don't know why FCP is not handling the footage properly, hopefully someone else here will help you out with that. But if worse comes to worst, you can just use Raylight or MXF4QT or Calibrated's MXF importer and be assured that your footage will work just fine.

What would be helpful is a detailing of what computer, OS, QT, and FCP versions, and where the p2 card volume is being stored.

is it on an external HDD, and if so, how is it formatted.

And how have you transcoded the mxf files to show them as QT movies? Because raw p2 card data is mxf not QT.

Love to help, but you need to explain specifically your hardware and software and workfow

Hi David S

I am using a PowerBook G4 with OS X and FCP version 5.1.4 with external Hard drive connected via firewire 800.

I use the PCI slot on the Mac for the P2 cards converting the MXF files to Quicktimes through the P2 interface in FCP.
thanks

Hi Barry

Does this mean I should try to keep my clips down to 5 to 10 minutes depending on what recording setup I'm in? Or does the P2 handle this and span the clips automatically to 4GBs ?

P2 automatically handles all clip lengths and file spanning. I've never ever given a quarter of a second's thought to clip length, it's all taken care of internally.

The External HD is formatted to FAT 32. I had no problems with the clips that took up to 4GB of space. I would like to point out however on another external HD I have which is formatted to Mac OS extended (Journaled) I was able to fit clips that were 4.26GBs and opened fine within FCP and Quicktime.

FAT32 drives have a 4GB limit...so anything that was 4GB or less...no problem. But over 4GB...you hit the wall. ALL mac media disks should be formatted MacOS Extended.

I copied over the file in question to the Mac extended drive but still says it can't open the file.

I don't know if this is the solution there is still some issue with the file and still can't seem to open it even though it has 4GB of information in it.
What do you suggest next ?
Thanks in advance
