P2 Firewire Adapter

The Panasonic PCD20 works through firewire 800. Or you could use the HVX200 or HPX500 in "1394 device mode" as a firewire card reader.

That means there is the Panasonic solution for 1.5k USD and nobody else ?

I do most of the work on an 24" iMac withouth any expansion and a Firewire PCMCIA adapter would be very handy.

You may think it's easy, but you may find that it's far more complex than it initially appears. Any reader has to have appropriate software drivers developed for it that allow it to communicate with the P2 cards.

Everyone's always asking for inexpensive readers, but none has ever appeared on the market. The closest we have is the duel adapter and the addonics adapters ($119 and $69, respectively; they work through ExpressCard slots and not through firewire). But the addonics doesn't yet work with Mac OS, and the duel had a lot of growing pains associated with it.

In short, it appears that in general, it sounds a whole lot easier than it actually is.

We are pretty professional in doing such bridging solutions. We are also member of the SATAIO and the 1394TA. The adapter will be totally transparent to the operating system that means no need for any driver. I sent this into our R&D department to evaluate a cost effective solution.

We will get a feedback soon.

Christian:

I will stand up and buy you two rounds of drinks at your favorite bar if you can economically and without driver issues provide a firewire to PC Card Bus II reader.

I've been around these boards of more than two years and none exist. Almost impossible to get a 32-bit reader.

Is there anyone on the board that know more details about the P2 cards ?
Has anyone ever opened a P2 drive?
Or is there any other source ? I think Panasonic won´t support us in this case.

Any comment appreciated

i would think if there were an "easy" road to solve this need. it would have been done already... id sell my sister to gypsies for a simple plugin firewire p2 reader!

We would rename the board christianadmirer.com.

So many of us would love a FW800 to cardbus reader that supports without driver issues importing p2 to desktops or to laptops in the field.

Get this in the $300.00 or under range with reliable operation and you would sell a lot of them.

the duel adapter works really well. I've never had any issues with it and it is fast. Firewire would be nice, but then again that would be one more thing that needs AC. Would be nice to have one for the desktop, but that would get little use since the footage is usually off of p2 cards and on harddrives by the time it gets anywhere near a desktop.

I know 1 of these has come up before - but has anyone done any major experimenting with either of these
http://www.quatech.com/catalog/drives_pcmcia.php
like even simply trying the usb adapter? Or putting the 32bit PCMCIA adpater in a case with a firewirebridge?

both meet the specs and could potneitally work with the preexisting p2 drivers - the x factor would be getting the quatech hardware to be recognized by a mac
