P2 editing question

Sorry for the duplicate post, but no takers over on the HPX500 side and I am kinda stuck until I resolve this...

Ok, here's the situation...

All day corporate job shooting with 2 HPX500's simultaneously.

Each camera went through about 7-16GB cards rendering 116 clips across all cards.

For what its worth, I work in CS3 Production Studio.

Using P2CMS, I exported each cameras clips into folders labeled Cam1 and Cam2.

So far, so good...

Now, I understand the naming convention assigned by the camera as being 001xx, 002xx, 003xx, and so on, which is fine, but when I dumped the contents of all of the cards into only 2 folders, I realize that I now have 7-001xx, 002xx, and you get the picture... with no distinguishing component other than the time and date stamp.

So in rethinking my workflow, I need to sort by time and date, and then rename the clips 001C1, 002C1, 003C1, and so on.

My question is, if I rename the clips using, say Adobe Bridge, will that mess up anything as it relates to all of those other folders within the Contents folder?

Also, I noticed when I bring the clips into PPro, that I get all 4 audio tracks even though there is only audio on one track.

Is there any way to bring in only the tracks with audio?

Thanks,
Brad

Using metadata templates, you could easily set the cameras to record the User Clip Names as "Camera 1 Clip 0001" and "Camera 2 Clip 0001" and so forth, respectively. If Premiere gives you access to the User Clip Name property, this would solve your problem.

mj,
Thanks for pointing me to the file structure doc. I had read that one before, but I think I'll go over it again.

THoff,
Unfortunately, I learned a little too late about the in-camera user clip name thing. I have already made that change in the cameras for future shoots, but I'm afraid I may be hosed for this one.

As for the access to User Clip Properties in PPro, I can get to the data, but it would require changing each file name one at a time.

I had to get this project going, so I just put everything back in their original folders and imported each clip into PPro one at a time and placed them manually into subfolders marked Cam1 Card1, etc.

I'm kind of surprised that the camera doesn't name the files incrementally across all cards instead of starting over with 001xx each time it encounters a new card.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

Another option you have is to use P2 Viewer to separate the footage.

You can create a virtual P2 card in P2 Viewer so you can browse the P2/MXF directory structure on your hard drive, play and review clips, mark them, and then copy them to a second P2 card, either a physical one or another virtual one. All the metadata for the clips will get copied, and you can consolidate multiple cards into one virtual card.

If you set up one virtual P2 card as a destination for the footage from each camera, it should be pretty clean.

Well, I was able to create the virtual card using Export out of P2CMS, but I wasn't able to (or able to figure out how to) batch rename the clips. That is my ultimate problem.

Now with shorter jobs, it won't be quite the issue, but for long form stuff, I have to find a different workflow.

Although, as it turns out, I have a Panosonic rep that live only minutes from my studio, so he is coming over Monday, and we're going to see if we can figure out a solution.

Stay tuned...
