I recently acquired a DVCPROHD, but it came without any cards at all. I am in the market for some p2 cards and am wondering if the 'E' Series is a good choice. Are there any drawbacks? They are much less expensive.
As long as you update to the latest firmware, you can use any cards. Much has been written about the "E" cards; they're much less expensive and even faster than the other cards. The tradeoff is that they have a shorter lifespan; Panasonic's estimate is that if you fill them up once per day, they'll last five years. The other cards last about 50x longer. If all you need is the 5-year lifespan, the "E" cards are an excellent deal.
I just bought a new 32Gb E series P2 card for my hvx200 for $499. Last week someone had used 64gb e series cards on ebay for $760 buy it now. The firmware was easy to upgrade. Tapeless workflow is awesome, not to mention the added ability to shoot in HD.
silly question:
I just received my first E series card. I know that I need to update the camera itself. Do I need to do anything to the drivers for the PC and/or Mac I import and edit with?
