P2 Downloading the 12:22:12 issue

Hi,

I am new to this community so I apologize is I am repeating a topic. I was unable to find my answer in the FAQ.

I am trying to offload my footage shot on my HVX200 and my partners HPX170. When the clips are spanned or as it now says "incomplete" I receive an error message and am unable to successfully transfer the clips. I have tried Log and Transfer and P2 Log Pro to no avail. I also tried copying and pasting the folder from the card to my drive and then trying the Log and Transfer. Still no luck.

I am getting this error on 3 different cards from 3 different cameras.

What am I missing?

Thanks for any help or pointing me in the right direction.

FCP 6.0.6
OSX 10.5.8

Can you please state your process for transferring files to your media drive prior to Log and Transfer for us?

Jim

I am using my laptop with an adapter. I insert the card, it is recognized on the desktop. When I open FCP and choose Log an Transfer it sees it. I select the clips and "add selection to que". It goes through the whole transfer process then the clips that are the 12:22:12 in length are not transfered. there is an exclamation point and the error message "there was an error in transferring. I have tried all clips, individual clips, P2 Log Pro using the adapter, the HPX170 via firewire and copying and pasting to drive and then trying Log and Transfer with my desktop.

No luck. I will try to get the adapter model for you now.

HVe you downloaded the latest driver for your computer and the latest software update for your camera?

Did you use R or E series P2 cards?

ah. i think this is your problem. and another VERY GOOD CASE of why you should TRANSFER your cards to the computer (or connected hard drive) BEFORE doing log and transfer.

what it APPEARS is happening is that you only have one card present in the duel adapter, so when FCP tries to capture the clip, the part spanned on the other card cant be found.

make a new folder on your computer, call it SPANNEDCARDS, in that folder create a folder called CARD01. drag both the CONTENTS and lastclip from the first P2 card to that folder. when thats done create another folder in that SPANNEDCARDS folder. call it CARD02. then repeat the process for the second card. (btw, it doesnt matter which p2 card you put into which folder. i just use the names 01 and 02 as example)

when you next do the log and transfer thing in FCP you can select both cards simultaneously and all will be good in the world!

the "SPANNEDCARDS" folder is not required. i just do it to keep my brain organized ; )

on another point. unless i just KNOW that im going to be shooting in long takes (like speeches, presentations, eng, music video, ect) i prefer to only have 1 card in the camera at a time. to avoid spanning situations. not that spanning is by definition problematic. i just hear a lot of people having problems where spanned cards are involved. - i personally have never had a problem with spanning AND i would imagine most problems folks have are self-induced like this one. i just figure - avoid variables where you can...

yet another point. once youve copied your source cards to your hard drive, thats your source archive. there is no need to log and transfer ALL that youve shot. just select the clips, or parts of clips you need. and here you can give them logical names, delete unneeded audio tracks etc. as well...
