P2 Dearth

I'm getting the impression that there are a few people out there in my boat who just bought an HVX200 but there is a P2 drought, not only waiting for the 16GB but with the 8GB too (and when I do find one it's hard to pay the price when $200 more gets another 8GB).

I read about the Hoodman 16 GB card and got all excited. So I emailed Lou Schmidt at hoodman about shipping dates and he said that "it could take as long as 60 days after the firmware upgrade has been released." :crybaby:

So, what's the word on the Panasonic P2s?

What do you mean?

16 Gb pre orders should be filled with limited quantities by end of May.

Other than that, what you are actually asking?

FYI, the firmware upgrade has been released, it was released maybe two weeks ago.

And yeah, there's a drought on. 16's haven't been released yet, but they're due very soon. 8's are sold out everywhere.

At B&H a few weeks ago I was told that there was a factory disaster (I don't remember exactly what the guy said), but he was answering a question regrading the stock of HVX. I wonder if this effects the p2 cards as well.

"Should be filled" and "limited quantities" by the end of May doesn't leave me with high hopes of actually getting one soon. I guess I'm just whining about the inability to use my new camera for these last couple of months. If I do locate a a rare 8GB card it's price is ridiculous to pay and I heard that the Hoodman 16GB would come out sooner but is now delayed because of the firmware update they have to work around.

The firmware update came out weeks before it was expected to, so they certainly shouldn't be using that as an excuse, they should be looking at it as a bonus.

However, is there any real world testing of the upgrade/firmware until actual 16 GB cards are available and in a real world environment?

I will and others hopefully can report some time next week

He simply said it could be up to 60 days after the release of the new firmware for them to make their cards ready to ship, so that gives them a two week head start. It would be great for Hoodman if they could get their product out before the Panasonic P2 because a lot of people would buy them simply because they're available first. I've heard some good about their cards and the competition will be good for everybody.

I'll just try and wait patiently.

FYI, my 16Gb cards arrived today, can pick them up when i want.
Im in Australia, if you havent realised.

Price $1289 AUD for one 16Gb Card.

Cheers

P.S There was a factory disaster, apparently the roof collapsed after an earthquake., and its very hard to get even a camera.
I was told this by my Panasonic Rep, in Melbourne today.

I'd be interested to learn what "good things" you've heard, because all I've heard was that Hoodman intended to make them by reverse engineering.

What have you heard and what is good about them?

That sounds like a decent price. Where are you getting those from?

I can't recall the thread I was on (may have been another site) but first they were about 20% cheaper and second they may be faster due to it's single chip design instead of the 4 chips in the Panasonic's chip set. Sounds good to me, especially that part about being cheaper.
Sorry I can't varify it, I can't remember where I read it.

The speculation -- based on what little information was available about the H2 cards -- was that the cards would be slower, not faster, than the Panasonic P2 cards. Supposedly they do not use an internal RAID0 configuration, reducing both cost and performance.

The bandwidth with SDHC memory and no RAID0 should still be fast enough to satisfy the 100Mbps requirement of DVCProHD, but there would likely be a significant performance difference if you tried to edit directly off the card. Since most people simply record and dump, random access speeds aren't nearly as important as random access.
