P2 Data Storage

I'm having an argument with a friend - who is a bit thick. I think. Or it could be that i'm wrong and i'm the thick.

OKay, you have an 80gb HD laptop which P2 cards are being transferred in to. Assume that the P2 cards are 8GB which hold 8mins, shooting in 1080 25p DVCPRO HD(i know that's not the case but let's assume!) My understanding is that the 80gb hard drive will hold 1.3 hrs of footage 8gb(8minutes) of DVCPRO HD footage.

Now his logic is something weird like 100mb/s per second equal blah blah etc..

Will someone more intelligent than me shed some light?

An 80gb hard disk will hold a bit more than 80 minutes of 1080 footage. The quick rule of thumb is "1 gigabyte = 1 minute" of DVCPRO-HD 1080. So 80 gb drive = 80 minutes of footage.

If you're talking about 720/24p footage, that 80gb hard disk would hold about 3.5 hours of footage.

...and the 100mb/s per second means the transfer speed from the P2 card to the actual hard drive. Thats 100mb a second of transfer.

The P2 card has a transfer speed of 640 megabits per second. 100mb/sec refers to the data rate that the data occupies on the card. 100 megabits = about 12.5 megabytes per second, so a one-second file takes up about 12.5 megabytes on the card.
