P2 cards with as masters for your dub house?

Hi all:

After reading the new Apple White Paper, it is apparent than you can use FCP to print your finished show back to P2. This got me thinking about if dub houses will ever accept P2 cards as finished HD masters that they can make dubs from?

Could be a pretty interesting concept to shoot 720 24PN, edit it in FCP, output a 720P show back to the card, send the card to the dub house and have them up-convert it to say, 1080i HDCAM or D5. Then they would just return your card along with the dub(s). This could be a very interesting workflow for those of use who cannot afford an HDCAM or D5 deck but still need to deliver HDCAM or D5 masters.

Any thoughts on if any dub houses have been clued in on this? I work in LA so I think I may open a dialogue with Point 360, Matchframe, IVC and a few others, that this could become a valid workflow for all of us HVX-200 users. There are a lot of HVX-200 users in LA, I would be willing to bet that few of us have the budgets to own true HD decks.

Of course, we can always just lay the file back to a FW drive but with the ruggedness and reliability of the P2 card, I would feel safer loaning them my card than a FW drive that is toast if it is dropped or hit hard.

Whadda ya think?

There is a small post house in Burbank called Alpha Dogs that markets a service they call the "Digital Service Station". The people there are very knowledgable and have Final Cut and Avid Symphony edit bays.

You can bring in your Final Cut or Avid final edit and the media on portable hard drives and put your show out to tape for a fee. This card idea seems to go right along with that and might be something they could offer if it worked well and enough people asked for it.

Yeah, I wouldn't try taking a card to a dub house; currently we're doing an infomercial and delivering hard disks to the dub house. They import the footage through FCP onto their RAID and go from there.

So just output a .MOV to an external hard disk and you should be able to take that just about anywhere.
