P2 cards keep crashing my powerbook!

Does anyone else have a problem with this? It seems everyone I know is.

Just for example this morning, when I offloaded my card, I ejected it, then powered off the card and it gave me a kernel panic, and the song I had been working on last night in garageband is now entirely gone, even though I saved it repeatedly.

Every time I'm in the field, the first time I plug in the P2, i get a hard crash. Frozen, no response. I always have to reboot, THEN it works from then on out.

This has been really annoying me lately, but did not push me into the "pissed off" territory until just now when it took my freaking song which I'd saved multiple times!

What's up, Panasonic?

To add, I worked on another shoot this weekend w/ another person's powerbook, we installed the P2 drivers, and they had the exact same problem with crashing upon either ejecting or inserting hte P2 card.

This is the wrong order of doing this. You should first drag the card to the trash or highlight it and select eject disk or hit the eject icon. Then once it is off the desktop then you can eject it from the slot.

Right, that's what I meant. I right clicked on it, hit 'eject', then powered it off and popped it out of the slot.

try re installing the P2 drivers. I've never encountered anything like this with my powerbook. Also try reformating your P2 card incamera...maybe this would do it??

This has happened to me about 4 times in the 5000 times I have inputted/ejected P2 cards into a Powerbook. I just drag the P2 card to the trash, then pop it out, and no frozen screens...

Statistically, there should be a low probability of crashes. But don't know why it happens even if infrequently...

I will try reinstalling the drivers, but this is not an infrequent issue for me. It happens every single time I put a card in. If it doesn't crash when I put the card in, it crashes when I pull the card out, even properly ejected.

However, I am wondering if having accessories plugged in like a firewire drive might have something to do with it.

Dunno if this has anything to do with your problem, but there has been a firmware update for the P2 cards. Barry addresses the problem in another thread. Sorry, couldn't find it.

cheers,

JP

try unmounting it using disk utility versus ejecting it (dragging to the trash).. you might be taking the card out too quickly, give it a second to cycle before actually taking it out.... make sure it doesn't register in disk utility before removing it from the slot

Which model PowerBook do you have?
I use two different 17" PBs... I sometimes have problems with the 1.67 G4, freezes sometimes.. Also have a 1.33 G4 that has never frozen while offloading P2

you are going to the top right icon in the desktop and choosing the "power off" function, right? I never do this. I merely eject the P2 card after trowing it on the trash. Untill today, no problem whatsoever.
