P2 Cards Are Dropping In Price

Jan points out that a 2gig P2 was $2,000 and has come down to $900 now. Around six months from now they might be $600 dollars. These prices are MSRP I believe. So they will be little cheaper than that. Jan said P2 would drop in price and she was not kidding. Great news.

I see having P2 for quick and dirty shots in studio or where I can't sit and download to portable device like a laptop or?

A DVCproHD Firestore for longer needs. Of-course there might small PCMCIA harddrives too!

Good news on P2 price drops!

How much footage can I record in a 2Gig P2 in 1080, 1 min?

So it's confirmed you can record HD straight to firewire HDDs like the Firestore or Lacie?

Your right! It's great we can do Firewire out.

So, you press the record button and you start to record HD straight to a FW HDD, no laptop needed?

If so, that's great!

I don't think you can record 1080 onto 2GB P2. Minimum is 4GB.

A FireStore is not a standalone firewire drive, it's a hard disk recorder that has a controller in it that captures streamed firewire data and records it on hard disk. It's not like a drive that you pick up off the shelf at Best Buy.

No camera can record straight to a hard disk like that. They all require a controller interface thing, like a QuickStream or QuickCapture or FireStore.

The HVX can dump P2 card contents onto an off-the-shelf hard disk, yes. But as far as streaming directly to it, capturing directly to it, so far that's not confirmed. It's not ruled out, but it's not confirmed -- it's still under development. If they do make it able to do that, it would be unprecedented, and it would also be very cool!

Something I just thought. If we use firewire to firestore or any drive, won't it compress the DVCPRO-HD signal to DV compression? Unless they come up with a HD firestore. Or am I totally confused here?

You are not confused, and yet what you're saying wouldn't happen either.

The FireStores that exist now can only record DV material, but they don't compress. They only transfer. So, an existing FireStore could only be used when the camera was in DV mode. If you put the camera in DVCPRO-HD mode, the FireStore wouldn't recognize the data stream so it would ignore it.

Yes, there will need to be an HD version of the FireStore. They've already figured out how to make it understand the HDV data streams, so now they have to get to work on making it understand the DVCPRO-HD data stream.

Would it be nice if this firestoreHD it´s multi-format too like the camera and allow us to record DVCPRO50 also? This option is getting better and better, All TV networks here still work in SD so if i can record in 50 instead of 25 i´ts a jump in quality and store time in HDD and P2 cards...

I´m going to forget DV very quickly, looks like!

I would think that understanding DVCPRO-HD data would be easier than understanding HDV data because there is less compression. Only issue is that the data rate is much faster.

I just heard an audio clip of an interview with Jan where she said Panasonic is working with the Firestore folks to make a version that will work with DVCPRO. So I'm positive there will be that option.
