P2 Cards, 2 16GB or 1 32GB

Hi all, I will be purchasing a HPX170 in a few months, and i was just wondering what would be my best bet.
2 16GB P2 Cards or
1 32GB P2 Card

It's cheaper to just get the 1 32GB, but it would be good to have the 2 16's in case one brakes, gets lost etc.

What do you guys think?

Thanks

You get a 16gb card when you buy the 170 anyways. So if you only need 32gb when you shoot, pick up another used 16gb card for $600 or so.

I like shooting with 16gb cards. It's nice being able to break my footage up and not having to rely on one card when I shoot.

2 of any sized card is better than 1 bigger one. as mentioned above, you can shoot to one while transferring the other.

yep. i have an old mac powerbook 17 that i have my camera assistant offload cards to as i fill them up. i cant imagine only having 1 card. nothing more unprofessional than halting production for a half hour while you transfer your only 32gig card...

In Canada, the 170 doesn't always come with a 16GB card. You have the option to buy the camera alone.

Do you guys just offload to laptops or what?

Yes, offload to a laptop... Total pain if you only have one card because everyone will have to sit around for 10+ minutes during every transfer. Each 16GB card can only hold around 17mins of 1080p footage so they can get used up pretty quickly.

Supposedly, using Host Mode, the HPX-170 can transfer to certain external firewire drives like the LaCie Rugged Hard drives without using a laptop but I haven't tried it yet... Still, you would have to stop shooting in order to do this so I still think hot swapping cards is much better...

No matter what you should decide, if it's going to be a couple months before you buy you'll be able to take advantage of the pricing on the forthcoming "E" P2 cards . . . 16's will be a bit more than $400 and 32's about two hundred more (USD).

And I fully agree with the concensus, 2 (or more) cards are always better than one. The only (IMHO) benefit to a single card may be longer run time and a few bucks cheaper than the two half sizes but operating with one card is kinda like "putting all your eggs in one basket."

Best.

I'd advise you get as many cards as you need for the type of shooting your doing,
ie, if your only shooting short clips for tvc's,. a single 16 will do.
But,
if your shooting events , get as many as you need for the day so as not have to download at all.
If your shooting news , same senario get as many as required so as not to have to stop to download,
everyone's situation is different, one set up dosen't / won't suit all.

I love having five cards , so downloading is not needed till days end...
If I were you i'd get by with a 16Gig for now, and then get a couple of 32 or even 64 E series P2's when they come out.. you only have to buy these cards once , not for every job.

Cheers
