P2 card to HD backup

Hi,

I just bought a new hard disk 160 Gb. The case I bought some time ago. In order to backup my P2 card clips, in what format should I format the hard disk? NTFS or FAT 32?

Thanks

Dorian

Depends on how you back up to it. If you intend to connect the drive directly to the camera and offload using IEEE HOST mode, then it must be formatted using FAT32 -- the camera can do this for you.

If you offload through a computer, the format doesn't matter.

thank you THoff!
Yeah, I want to dump the data right into the Hd without a computer.
You mean to say, I just connect the camera via firewire to the Hd and it will format it? It does not work via firewire....would it work with USB?
I supose it would be better when the camera formats rather than a computer.....

Dorian

Yes, in fact it must. The drive has to be formatted by the camera before the camera can use it.

And no, you can't do that through USB on the HVX200, it has to be firewire.

If your drive has USB On-The-Go protocol, then you could use it for USB transfers from the HVX (with the HVX in USB DEVICE mode); in a case like that yes the drive must be formatted by the computer to be FAT32 mode.

Thanks Barry, I tried to format, I get as far as the Copy to Hdd/Setup window. But all I get is Setup>verify>on or> off.
I can not get to "Format Hdd". I have the Hdd connected via firewire and the PC mode is set to 1394 host.
When I connected the Hdd via firewire to the computer, it shows up right away.

Dorian

But it does not work! I even formatted the HDD initially with the computer in FAT 32. When I connected it again, I can not move to Format HDD. In order to do the format, must I have inserted a P2 card?

Dorian

I tested it on an HPX500, but I'm sure the HVX200 would work the same way... you don't need any cards installed in order for the "format" option to pop up.

I don't know why it isn't working for you -- can you try a different firewire cable?

Barry,
would you please check, if you can move from setup to the other options on that menu without a cable connected to the camera (but still in 1394 Host Mode)
On my camera it is the same, it does not move.

Thanks

Hey, dude I'm getting exactly the same! I've just bought all the 'bits' to allow me to dump off to an external drive and am now sat in Starbucks (central London) trying to get this set-up working BUT all I get offered is the Setup>verify etc :( I've tried fomatting into Fat32 via my Mac but like NOTHING works :(

If anyone can help on this I'd REALLY REALLY appreciate it! :)

Indy.... Overdosing on Starbucks expresso on Tottenham Court Road London!

I've connected the drive to my MBP and all works as per expected... its only when attached to the HVX that it all goes pear shaped. If I hadn't read the above posts I would have come to the conclusion that my HVX was faulty but that appears not to be the case. Apart from the actual Hdd the items that I bought are exactly the same as the ones mentioned in a recent post on the subject of offloading to an external Hdd, so I'm really confused (and a bit miffed at all the time I've spent TRYING to get this to work) as to why this isn't working. I can't check with the HVX manual as its at home and Panny's FTP server is "down" as it won't download. Bad day all round :(

Indy... Too many Starbucks expresso's need to go lie down in a darkend room! :(

Finally I've managed to download the HVX's manual.... I've followed the instructions to the letter and I'm still getting the SAME problem.... all it highlights is the Setup > Verify menu all the HDD Format stuff is greyed out.

There has to be a logical explanation for this and as this is THE internet resourse for the HVX soembody here must have an answer!

Reason I'm so impatient to get this resolved is that I'm off to Central America in a few days and I really do need to get this working!
Cheers

Hello.

I use a 80gb hdd to backup P2 Cards. I use firewire on HVX200, and power from usb on my computer. I will make a batteripack with a usb plug, then i dont ned the computer.

The meny are gray exept for the verify on/off, but when the HVX sees the HDD, i can select every thing.

Hi Falcon, I've n ow had a night to sleep on it and I think your correct insofar as the HVX isn't seeing the HDD. If I disconnect everything then I get the same error i.e. just the Setup> verify etc. Is there another required specification for the HDD that I don't know about or is there a setting somewhere else on the HVX that I'm missing?
Cheers

Hello Indy.

How do you give power to your HDD?
My setting jumper setting on the HDD is master.
I tested a 160GB. I can format it with the HVX. But when I try to copy a card, the Hvx give me an error (do not remember the error, but i will try again later).

Dude,

I don't know your hdd case, but mine needs 5 V DC power because the Camera does not supply any power to the battery.
Took me also some time to get that information!
I called the maker of my box (dvBox) and they told me 5 V DC 600 mA. Where you get that odd power? Check the charger of your cell phone...or iPod, all you need is a plug, that fits into the power socket.... mine is 3.4 mm.
The maker adviced me NOT to use the USB of the computer for power.... there might be a data loss!
Also careful the guy who is making a battery pack. The power must be as close as possible to 5 V.
Well, with IC and a few capacitors you can assemble one, but I saw some battery boxes with a 5 V USB output. But the one I saw were max 400 mA. Not enough for my hdd.
Good luck

First i was thinking of making usb batterypack 5v min 860mA. But it is smarter to make a firewire batterypack without a regulator.
It can be from 8v to 30v. I will split the firewirecabel, or rewire the dc out to firewire inside the harddrivecover. I think i put a little voltmeter on the battery pack.

I was able to find an AC adapter for the hdd.
I just made a test. I formated the hdd with the HVX. After that I copied 5 clips I had on a P2 card. But when I checked the size of the hdd in the computer it only showed 14 Gb. The hdd has 160 Gb. What happen to the rest?

Dorian

That's the way the P2 offloading system works. It only allocates as much space as it needs. The rest exists in an unallocated pool. As you copy more cards, it will request more space from that pool and create new partitions.

Thank you Barry, that is good to know.....so you only need to format it once with the camera...because FAT 32 on PC has limitations.
One more question-I have a handgrip with a switch.
I would like to use it on the HVX 200.
Is there something like an on-off remote switch?
The original has a Fisher Plug, but would be easy to be changed

Dorian

On/off for power? No, but there's remotes for iris, focus, zoom, and record start/stop... look at the VariZoom lineup for the cheapest, or the Foxi/Zoe for better control but higher cost.

Sorry, I mean start and stop. Not on - off.
I have a handgrip from Aaton, which is much better than most other grips and it has a build in switch. (cost was also far more than most of other controls) So I would like to use it. But it is troublesome to manually stop the camera with that
