P2 card readers?

They say you can plug a P2 card into your laptop's PC card reader and transfer footage/files. So for all of us desktop users, surely there's a piece of hardware that accepts P2 cards? Something maybe like this?

"Reads & writes CompactFlash Type-I/II, Microdrives, Memory Stick (Pro), Memory Stick Duo (Pro), Secure Digital (SD), SD Mini, MultiMedia Card (MMC), RS-MMC, SmartMedia media, and etc virtually all flash media in the market now"

Somehow I don't think this $22 gizmo is going to cut it...

If that's a 32-bit device, then yes it would work. At $22 I'd expect that it would be a 16-bit device. Look for a 32-bit Cardbus reader, should be under $100.

Actually, that particular device won't work. Most of the commonly available card readers don't have PCMCIA slots, which are what we'll need for P2 media.

Unfortunately, the PCMCIA readers for desktop PCs are harder to come by and not made by the common manufacturers like SanDisk or Lexar.

Maybe someone (Barry?) could point us to a product that would work. P2 card to G5 is going to be a common workflow. Whoever makes this reader will get quite a few orders the 1st few months afrter the release.

how about....

how about....

how about a Powerbook PC Card slot? It accepts both 16- and 32-bit cardbus cards. I doubt that any 3rd party readers under OS X will recognize P2 cards (since at the moment powerbooks can't even recognize them) - at least until apple cleans up that problem.

Will you have a G5 tower standing by on set? I suppose you probably would in an FX house. Even then, maybe you can still use a powerbook as an intermediate step, RAIDing to hard drive and an external Firewire 800 drive. Once apple clears the way, downloading footage via the powerbook's PC Card slot should be incredibly fast on a powerbook (assuming a fast hard drive).

any other thoughts?

Would something like this work?

It looks like these should do the job, assuming the P2 media doesn't haven any bizarre quirks that make them incompatible with them (which I doubt, otherwise P2 wouldn't work in laptops either.)

I'm quite looking forward to seeing how P2 takes off when the HVX launches. I'm one of the people that "gets it" with P2. (Especially coming from a 16mm film background where 100' loads only get you 2 3/4 minutes.)
