P2 card question

I've never used a camera with a P2 card. How do you actually use one in practice? Let's say you are shooting during an 8 hour day and you are recording HD at 1 GB per minute. Do you need several of these expensive little guys or do you bring a hard drive along and just upload as you go along? Do professionals just bring lots of 32 GB's along for the shoot and upload at the end of the day?

I'm looking at an HPX-170 for purchase and was thinking of having two P2 cards either 16 or 32 GB depending on how my budget is doing, and I'm trying to figure out how you film all day with only 32 little minutes of storage at any given time. (How many P2's for someone who can afford an HPX-170?)

Thanks!

My 16GB card gets 42 minutes worth of footage at 720 24PA and 16 minutes at 1080. Most people I know how a bunch of 16GB/32GB cards and have a AC swapping/offloading cards all day long.

I also know a few people who use the hard drives, which connect to the cameras. I don't know to much about these but I know for people who need to shoot all day this is the way to go.

I believe that's 42 minutes at 720/24pNative, not pA.

An inexpensive PC Cardbus equipped laptop can be used to offload p2 cards

I have 2 16Gb P2 cards. Shooting at the highest resolution I get around 16 min.
a card. When they are full, I dock them in my laptop. I have about 185Gb free
space on my laptop.

When I finished for the shoot, I transfer my P2 footage to a 1TB external HD.

Then, I transfer the ext. drive's footage to my editing suite. This sounds a bit
time consuming but it really isn't. Plus, I know have backed up my footage on two
sources.

When the 32Gb E-Series Card are available, I'll pick a couple of them up as well.

Good luck.

I have one 16 and one 32GB card. Since you can hotswap them you only need two cards to keep shooting nonstop (while your assistant swaps and offloads cards as you shoot). This could be a bit stressful so I guess optimum would be 3 cards.

If you're not really tied to a time limit while shooting you may as well only use one card and don't stress yourself.
