P2 Card or Firestore FS-100

Hi,

I'm budgeting out an HVX200 and have two questions:

Does it require a P2 card to work or can I just purchase a Firestore FS-100 instead?

Is there anything else similar to the Firestore FS-100?

Many thanks!

I hope you won't mind if I ask a few questioons about what you plan on shooting, because there are several solutions and this is NOT a case of one size fits all. (One solution is ideal for everyone.)

If you are shooting a wedding or something like it, where the camera must capture video for up to 1 hour at a time, the answer is going to be different than ...

Someone shooting a "film" where the longest running time is a few minutes and this is going to be different than ...

Someone shooting a documentary in the field who has to carry everything with them.

Also, you you plan on shooting DVCPRO50, 720@24p, 720@30P, or ...

Please read through many of the postings, there's a lot to learn from what others have posted.

For weddings you'd need the Firestore FS-100. It mounts directly on top of the HVX200 and will record about 1.5 hours of HD footage. I just got a unit in to review with my HVX200 for a national magazine. So far I'm really liking the FS-100 way more than using a pair of P2 cards.

Citidisk and Cineporter won't be out until late this year, so don't hold your breath. I'll be reviewing both of those with the HVX200 when they're ready to ship us review units. But both companies told me it'd be awhile. So don't hold your breath on these solutions if you need to work "now".

FS-100 is now shipping, too.

Agree with BenB on this one. I as well hope to be reviewing HVX with Firestore FS-100 for the national magazine for which I write. I got identical responses from both CitiDisk and Cineporter's manufacturers that we won't see product for a while. I am really pleased to see that so many print reviews of HVX will be appearing as each of us will bring our own respective workflow styles, shooting modalities, and general perspectives to the HVX. I, for example, already approach the review with a strong sense of advocacy both of the camera and the P2+direct to disk workflow. I'll be very interested in reading BenB's article when published.

Same goes to Panasonic with the P2 cards...

But, the intent of a company is to make money. Lots of it!

They're still people waiting to buy the 8 gig cards. Why would Panasonic release the 16 gig before this demand is filled.

It's a simple market rule. Don't cut your own product with something newer, cheaper and better too soon.

It's also risky and as soon as Pana controls a large portion of this particular market (which I believe is happening with the HVX) the better. The HVX was introduced 1 year ago and accessories and such are quite rare still.

So, it did not happened on NAB but it's coming.
Price on the 8 and 4 gig will drop when the 16 arrives.

And both Cineporter and CitiDisk will be cranking to make their products available ASAP.

From our side it sucks and generates a lot of anxiety, like the ones we're seeing on this board daily.

We have to wait and play the game as it comes with the best of our knowledge and, of course, a little help form our friends (Barry, Jared, Bob, etc…).

ive heard that the fs-100 dont record 24p/24pn mode. So unless you dont mind shooting 1080i or w/e, then i guess it is the best bet. Otherwise i would say get a P2store with the cards to download info on.

Firestore will record 24p over 60. The HVX cannot stream 24p native out via firewire so you will need to record to P2 cards to take advantage of 24pN and the associated over/undercranking frame rates.

I was understanding that you could use over/undercranking with FS100, but just couldn't preview it in field. Focus at least says on their brochure that it does advanced features with the HVX200 such as timelapses. Can anyone confirm this?
